The Nutmeg State

Connecticut one of the original thirteen states. It gets it's name from tne Indian word meaning beside the long tidal river. It has several state nicknames 1 being The Land of Steady Habits, because of the Steadfast qualities of the industrious home loving people 2 The Consititution State because its first laws, called the fundenentals Orders, formed the model for parts of the Consititution of the United States. Connecticut farmers worked so hard to provide food for the American Army during the Revolutionary War that George Washington gave Connecticut another of it's nicknames The Provision State or the Arsenal of the Nation. It is also called The Nutmeg State.

                 A Bit of History

First Claimed by the Dutch by Adrianen back in 1614. The first English Settlement was in Winsor in 1633. The Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden in the Charter Oak in 1687. When Massachusetts towns became crowded their land hungry people spilled over into Connecticut. These first settlers were not only looking fertile land but also for more political, religious, and economic freedom than they had been  allowed in Massachusetts. Thus Connecitcut became know at an early date as one of the most liberial and progressive of the colonies
This Reputation brought new settlers of the same type. They were English men with different and novel ideas, and a desire for freedom, who poured into the Colony . Connecticut won the greatest measure of self-government granted to any English colony because of the indepent nature of its early Leaders.
