Vermont recieved it's name and nickname from the mountain range that extends from the top of the state down to Massachusetts.  Samuel de Champlain lead a team of French explorers in 1609 and they called the mountains Ver Mont or Green Mountains
The French made their first settlement at Sainte Anne in 1666. The First English settlement was Fort Drummer near Battleboro in 1724. Bennington Vermont was settled in 1761,making it the second oldest english settlemlent other than Fort Drummer. In 1764 Ethan Allen orginizes the Green Mountain Boys to rid the state of the New Yorkers and to fight for it's indepence in 1777. Declaring itself to be the new Republic of New Connecticut. Thomas Young ,who help draw up the new republics constitution suggested that the name be changed to Vermont.
The state capital of Vermont is Montpelier and Burlington is the largest city.
