The Magnolia State
Mississippi got it's name from the Ojibwa word  misi sipi meaning "great river"
It's nickname is the Magnolia State and the State Captial is Jackson. It entered the union  Decemeber 10,1817 (20th). The State Motto is "Virtute et armis" ( By Vitute and arms).

Mississippi ranks as the poorest state in the nation can be traced to the Civil War. Before the Civil War, Mississippi was the fifth-wealthiest state in the nation. The war cost  the state 30,000 men. Plantation owners who servived the war were virtuall bankrupted by the emancipation of the slaves.,and Union troops under Sherman and others left widespread destruction in their wake. The increasingly harsh race laws passed around 1900 also cost the state in the emigrationof almost half a million (75% blacks,25% whites) in 1940's. Compounding all this was the fact that until World War II, Mississippi had virtually no Urban center such as Jackson to attract or sustain major industry.
