Welcome to the official Synthology homepage. Synthology is a progressive music studio project based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  The debut CD titledBetween Day and Night; and the second titled The Fairest of Moments can be acquired through our label Fossil records. The first is in the process of being re-recorded in 24 bit sound (see the news page for details..

Synthology's mission is to produce progressive music with complete attention to artistic integrity and wanton disregard for commercial success. To borrow from classical, jazz and folk to make what is hopefully interesting music.  An often maligned genre, progressive music has always strived for a more cerebral approach within the rock medium. Sometimes accused of being pretentious, it has always attempted to expand the boundaries traditionally placed on rock music. The best thing about progressive  (and the main selling point) is that it incorporates some of the best from other genres and weaves compositions with intricate instrumental and vocal passages. The use of alternating soft and hard sections also give the music a dynamic quality which is only seen in classical music.

What Synthology is not about is instrumental acrobatics for their own sake. The emphasis is on melody and the compositions are looked at from this stand point first. The best way to judge for yourself is to listen to some samples of the music.

Despite its lack of popularity in the mass media, Progressive music continues to enjoy a small but loyal following. Since Synthology is a project which does not depend on financial success (ie. we have day jobs), the artistic vision cannot be compromised for the sake of album sales. That being said, we do hope you will buy a cd or two!

By marketing over the internet we hope to reach an audience which is receptive of this music - which clearly falls outside the mainstream radio play (don' t get me started..!!).

The main musician in Synthology is:

JOHN ALARCON
(Keyboards, composer)

Using the help of other talented support musicians.

Musical influences include Genesis, Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips, Rick Wakeman, PFM, ELP, Mike Oldfield, Supertramp,  King Crimson and many other artists who are not afraid to blur the lines between musical genres .  The music leans toward symphonic because classical is the major dominating influence. Progressive has in recent years tended to mean progressive metal, but this genre almost always avoids the more pastoral material which so many 70s bands did superbly well - think Genesis, Crimson and Tull here.

If you like the music or have any comments or questions we can be reached at: synthology1@yahoo.com

We hope you will support Synthology's efforts as independent musicians and consider purchasing a cd if you like the material.  Where would we all be without the internet?!
