Fifty-second day of Spring, Year of the Bear (morning) [5/7/02]
Today I went for another walk, stopping over at the marketplace first. A poster there told me that a giant is ravaging the countryside outside the city. They offer a reward--50 gp from the thorp being menaced the worst for defeat of the giant; 150 from the regime itself, but only upon proof that the giant has been slain. Other than that, I heard talk of a spring festival coming soon. It seems to be mostly organized by the Church. Interesting--I hadn’t really expected festivals from the Church. Perhaps there is indeed more to it than I yet know--all the more reason to investigate it further.
And more disturbing news, but quite ambiguous: rumors of people vanishing in the city’s slums are running about. Most disturbing, especially when one considers the shadows. I mustn’t act in haste, however. After hearing of this, I walked to the Guild, searching for Daron. It’s quite a hearty walk from the inn. He wasn’t there, so I left him a note, telling of the rumors I’d just heard and asking for any news on the expedition. Then I walked through the city, heading back to the marketplace. When I finally arrived, preparations for this spring festival were being spoken of heavily by all. I rested for a moment, but was interrupted by a shout--it was Hermy. He was drawing his blade and attacking a rather fat man, cutting him across the shoulder before I could reach him. But he was already bleeding profusely from his nose. I reached him in time and was able to save his life with my touch. Hermy had been saving a woman from him--he was about to attack her when he struck him in the nose with a rock. I was right--his throwing arm is dangerous. The woman was grateful, thinking that I had saved her. I corrected her; saying that it was Hermy who had helped her. When that was cleared up, I woke the attacker and guided him from the market so we could speak, bringing Hermy with me. Hermy explained everything--he’d been following the man, who was one who attacked he and Kywyn. I then got some information from the fat thug, then told him I was giving him a second chance. He ran, blubbering that he would take my advice. Hermy believed it may have been folly to spare him, but I explained a little about mercy to him. He was worried about his kittens, so he left to check on them, and I returned to the inn.
I’ll stay here for a short while, then I’ll go out again.
