TCIS Track Past Recaps and Results
2005 Recap: For the first time in twenty years, Coach Lampert was not the meet director and the meet was not held at Norfolk Academy. This meant he could coach more and we was betting on the meet running long. So long that they had to turn the lights on at Darling Stadium. Norfolk Academy's boys would spread the events extremely well with a team with a lack of depth and talent to win the meet once again. They were paced by their strong hurdlers, Richard Higham-Kessler and Davis Powell. Greenbriar Christian came close with a strong group of throwers, Trevor Bray was just inches off a 23 year old record in the shot. Bishop Sulivan was third with strong performances by Ryan Edlich and Rocky Rockworth, who set the high jump record at 6-6. Bobby Lindemann finally got a couple victories on the track to go with his cross country championships. In the girls Norfolk Academy dominated. Ginna Ellis won the 1600 and the 3200, Elizabeth Cherry won the sprints, Christine Sargent won the long and triple jumps, Dori Rucker won the Discus. PC and GCA got strong performances out of their sprinters/jumpers and took 2nd and third, well ahead of 4th place walsingham. Maybe ill write more later.
2004 Boys and Girls: Norfolk Academy won both the girls and boys 2004 Track Championships. In the boys Walsingham edged out Peninsula Catholic for 2nd, and Catholic was much stronger than anyone would have thought when the season started at 4th. Will Byrd(NA) was the meet overall MVP, Scott McNelis(W)was named the outstanding runner, and Danny Yu(HRA) got the outstanding field events award. Also of important note was Taylor Harwin(NA) who won both throwing events, and Aaron Klansek(GCA) who broke a 19yr old meet record in the high jump. The girls meet was close till the very end, with Norfolk Academy really widening their gap in the triple jump(the day's last event). Greenbriar was second lead by a tremendous effort by the Meet MVP Zipporah McCann who set the meet record in the triple jump. Suzanne Ginnow(CH) who won the 1600 and set the meet record in the 3200 was named the Outstanding Runner. Heather Ireland(NA) was named the outstanding field events performer with wins in the shot and the discus. Boys, Girls |

2003: Boys- PC and WAL came in favored to win the meet after dethroning Norfolk Academy for the first time in 17 years in 2002. It was a close meet, but Will Byrd stole the show. He scored 50 points to help NA regain the top position in the TCIS. Taylor Harwin added 18 points with a win in the discus and a second in the shot. Senior Emanuel Gregg added on valuable points in the hurdles, and Jeff Clinton took second in the 800. The rest of NAs points were scrapped out by underclassmen picking up 4th-6th place finishes. Walsingham made a strong attempt to defend its championship. An injured Tony Brickhouse looked awful in the 1600, but came back to gut out a victory in the 800. Soberick took 4th in the 1600 and 2nd in the 3200, and the Walsingham hurdlers took all the spots that NA didnt take. Walsingham also won every relay but it was not enough. PCs Bobby Lindemann won the 3200 and took third in the 1600 while John Gounley took second in the 1600 and third in the 3200. Barton won the shot. Sean Murray of Norfolk Colliegiate came into the meet look a little heavy, but used the sit and kick race plan to blow everyone away in the last 300M of the 1600. Domingo Solomon from Catholic dominated the sprints. Boys Results 2003: Girls- Norfolk Academy won again thanks to a dominant sprinter/hurdler/jumper, a very good group of throwers, and a solid distance group. Sara Rainey scored 50 points in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps. Ricky Jones won the shot and the discus. Heather Ireland was second in the discus and 4th in the shot, and Beasel Patel was third in the discus. In the distances Kate Hixon won the 1600 and was third in the 800. The guttsiest performance of the day came in the middle distances. Ashley Hughes won the 400 in 61, won her trial heat of the 200 in sub-28, won the 800 in 2:26.1, and then came back exhausted and took 6th in the 200 finals. All of this in 20 minutes. Greenbriar Christian took second place with a strong group of sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers, but they could not fill the throws or distances well enough to pose a serious threat to NA. McCann won the long and triple jumps, was third in the high jump and 200, and was second in the 100. Dowdy won the 200, and Coulter was second in the 100h and third in the 300h. Susan Gibbs was their only scoring distance runner with a third in the 1600 and a 4th in the 800. PC was in third, most of their points coming in the distance events. McHugh had their best performances on the day with second place finishes in both the 1600 and the 800. Girls Results 2002 Boys: The last time Norfolk Academy had lost the TCIS boys track championship was in 1985. There a couple years where the streak could have ended, in 1995 NA beat PC by a half a point after top sprinter Damien Taylor pulled a hamstring in his first event. In 1998 NA had pretty much all freshmen and a few juniors and although picked 5th managed to upset Catholic in a windy 35 degree rainstorm. The obstacles were similar to those of the 1998 season. A core of seniors who had anchored the team for 4 yrs had graduated(Dize, Holbrook, Lampert, Gregg, Partington, Siegel). Senior Brian Donahue would lead a young team with very little depth into the TCIS meet against a huge and talented Walsingham team. Of course it didnt help that the flu went through NA the week prior to TCIS and that many athletes ran sick at Prep League the Saturday before. The distances is where Walsingham would beat up Academy. Tony Brickhouse would jog 3 victories with no real competition. Academy's Atkinson(a 4:50 miler and 10:30 2miler) tried to run sick but could muster no better than a 5:12 for no points and an agonizing death of 11:47 in the 2mile. Pat Lyons from NA who had run a 2:03 800 the yr before ran a frustrating 2:18. A sick Lyon McClean was a good 5 seconds off his PR in the 400 leaving him at 4th. Donahue, a heavy favorite in the 100, cramped in the finals and settled for 2nd to Domingo Solomon(10.8) of Catholic, he would later win the 200, take 5th in the long jump, and run a leg on the third place 4x400 team. PC and Walsingham ran away with the places that NA usually took and left the bulldogs Behind. Boys results. 2002 Girls: Norfolk Academy proved they could win without Byrd and Berger. Now it was Ellis and Hixon dominating the distances and Hughes in the long sprints. Ellis won the 1600 and the 3200, Hixon won the 800 and took second in the 1600, and Hughes put NA way up on their winning 4x800 team, won the 200 and the 400. Rickey Jones was second in the shot, and then won the discus. Sara Rainey added on 32 points as well. Greenbriar took second with strong performances by Susan Gibbs in the distances and a strong group of sprinter/jumpers led by Zipporah McCann and Courtney Coulter. Coulter would win both hurdle races, and McCann would win the 100, take 2nd in the 200, long jump, and triple jump.. Girls results. 2001 Boys: Norfolk Academy won pretty easily and swept the list of MVPS with Marcus Gregg and his 52 points getting the meet MVP, Zach Lampert getting the running event MVP, and Jeff Partington getting the field event MVP. Gregg won both hurdle races and the long jump, took 2nds in the triple jump and high jump, was on the third place 400r team, and was 4th in the discus. Partington won both the shot and the discus. Lampert finally won the events that had long eluded him, but did not get to go after a 1600r championship because of an event that caused some contraversy in the meet: in the 3200r HRA was leading NA going into the last leg, Lyons from NA reeled in the HRA anchor and put about 40 yds on him before in the last 10 yds of the race blacking out and falling face first. As he regained conciousness and crawled to the line, the HRA anchor sprinted past him and beat him by a half second. However the HRA athlete threw the baton across the infield and was red flagged by multiple finish line officials. He admitted to the meet director that he had throw the baton and his team was disqualified(as it states in the rulebooks). Lyons became extremely sick due to the fall and had to leave the meet, without him, there were not enough eligible runners with 400 range left for NA to run a 4x400 team. Other good performances on the day were Tony Brickhouse's 2nd in the 1600 and win in the 3200, and George Wilson's second in the 800. Domingo Solomon beat Brian Donahue in the 100 meter final after Donahue pulled his quad(he sat out the rest of the meet). Sten Atkinson from Academy took second in the 3200 and ran a leg on the 4x800 team(which won due to the dq). Boys Results 2001 Girls: Norfolk Academy dominated the rest of the field with Jennifer Byrd scoring 60 points, Jill Berger winning the 1600 and the 800. Ricky Jones won the shot and the discus. Ashley Hughes won the 400. Megan Doviak won the 200. NA won every event except for the 3200, and thats only because they wanted to keep their distance runners fresh for the State meet. They would go on to be State Champions that Saturday. Girls Results 2000 Boys: Tim Dutton did everything he could to try to help Catholic beat NA, but Academy's depth prevailed. NA would only have one first place finish on the day(Marcus Gregg in the 110h), but would still manage to come out on top. The distance races of the day were by very exciting. Long time foes Zach Lampert and Tim Dutton would match up in the 1600 and in the 800. The pace in the mile was fast early, Lampert was determined to lead after the race the yr before and Dutton pushed him out in 63 for the first lap. The pace remained hard and Lampert twice built up a lead of 15yds, but both times Dutton dug down to get back in the race. At 600 to go Lampert began to faulter, and Dutton took control of the race, opening up on him over the last lap to win 4:30-4:39 a disapointing race for Lampert who had edged Dutton 4:31.9-4:32 just weeks before. The 400R would then have an effect on the 800. NA went out of the exchange zone and got disqualified. Now Catholic was within range of NA. Catholic had 2 good 800 runners, Dutton and Andrews. Andrews never ran well off a fast pace and had already ran(and won) the 400, so Lampert's race plan was switched from go for the win to go out flying, and make it a 2 person race. Lampert was out in 57, Dutton and Andrews lagged behind. Dutton surged forward and caught Lampert at 200 and passed, but Lampert was not done yet, at 120 he surged back, and they battled down the straightway, both tied up and looking for another gear. At the line Dutton leaned for the victory, under 2:02, Lampert 2nd at 2:02. Dutton would finish his day with a win in the 3200, the max amount of points a distance runner can score, Lampert would finish running a 52 split on the 2nd leg of the 1600r to move NA into second behind HRA who was just over the meet record in 3:33.7. HRA had a strong showing in the meet, with some extremely talented foreign students taking lots of points in the sprints and the jumps. The best athlete in the Competion was J. Jenkins from NSA. He won the 100, 200, long and triple jumps, his 200(22.2) and LJ(21' 10") were meet records. He would win the 100 at Big East in 10.5(fat) the next year at Virginia Tech. Boys Results 2000 Girls: Norfolk Academy dominated the meet. Jennifer Byrd had 58 points, Jill Berger won the 1600, Ashley Hughes won the 800 and ran a leg on the winning 3200R team. Aimee Gibbs from Greenbriar Christian led her team to a 2nd place finish with a meet record in the 3200(12:03.7). Nansemond-Suffolk got a strong performance from a foreign exchange student named Hannah Weydahl, She won the 400M in a then meet record 61.5, and also tied the meet record while beating Jenn Byrd in the High jump at 5'. She also was 2nd in the 800 and the eventual State Champ in that event. Girls Results 1999 Boys: This was a rematch between Norfolk Academy and Catholic. Catholic had lost in the rain the year before, but was hungry and looking for redemption. Had it still been 1998 Catholic may have won, but the Academy team was 1 year older and had graduated no one. Academy would win by dominating the Hurdle/jump events, with Marcus Gregg taking 2nd in the high hurdles and winning the 300h; Andy Le taking 2nd in the 300h, Andrew Holbrook taking 3rd in the 110h, 2nd in the HJ, and third in the LJ and TJ; Chad Dize taking 4th in the 110H, 300H, and LJ, 2nd in the TJ, and 5th in the HJ. Tim Dutton from Catholic would dual Zach Lampert of NA in the 1600, running even 70 splits the whole way with Lampert sitting on his shoulder until the last 100m when Dutton broke away for the victory. Lampert would take third in the 800 with his older brother Ted pacing him and taking 4th, and then the brother would both run in the 2nd place 4x400 team. Tim would also win the 3200. Thomas Mosquera took second in the shot but won the discus for Academy. J. Jenkins would win the 100, 200, LJ, and TJ for Nansmond Suffolk. Luoma from Cape Henry won the 800 and also won the high jump. Boys Results 1999 Girls: Norfolk Academy won a heated battle with PC. Norfolk Academy was led by Jennifer Byrd's 60 points. PC was led by a very experienced Bridgette Keenan. Keenan would dominate the distance events, winning the 1600 and the 800 and taking 2nd in the 400. . Norfolk Academy's distance girls were young other than their senior leader Kathleen Toone who took 4th in the 1600 and 3200, and 2nd in the 800. Aimee Gibbs took 2nd in the 3200 and 4th in the 1600 for 3rd place Greenbriar Christian which also got a pair of 2nds and 3rds in the hurdles from Courtney Coulter and Tamara Burns. Girls Results 1998 Boys: One of the Closest TCIS meets of the last 20 years. It was 35 degrees, windy, and raining. NA had very little talent and was picked 5th, Catholic had tons of talent and was picked to win, and NSA had J. Jenkins. Catholic's Dutton would become sick in the cold and would be done after a 5th place finish in the 1600. This opened the door for NA freshman Zach Lampert to take third in the 1600 and 2nd in the 3200 and run on the 4th place 1600r. Jenkins would win the 100, 200, LJ, and TJ as expected. Bennett from Catholic won the 400 with a meet record 51.2 and ran on their winning 4x400 team. Justin Andrews would place 4th in the 300h and 2nd in the 800 for Catholic. Tom Mosquera would the shot and discus for NA, and Andrew Holbrook would win the HJ and take 3rd in the TJ along with down the line places in the LJ, 110h and 300h. Andy Le picked up 2 third place finishes in the hurdles. Louma from Cape Henry won the 1600 and the 800. Walsingham would place high in the hurdle events and scrap places here and there all meet long. In the end though it was NA with a victory to remember. Boys Results 1998 Girls: PC won relatively easily under the leadership of Bridgette Keenan in the distances. Jill Berger picked up 2nds in the 1600 and 800, and Mason White won the 200 and was second in the 100, HJ, and long jump to pace NA to 2nd place. Girls Results |
