To our family additions page. Around Christmas (2000)  we were in a local pet store, don't really remember why we were even there. Nevertheless we were looking around and saw the birds that they had out, they were not caged so you could interact with them. There were about five birds in this one playpen. I saw or should I saw first I heard him clucking like a chicken, I thought that was the neatest thing. I was really afraid to touch him because the biggest bird I ever messed with was a little parrotkee. Bryan (my other half ) saw him to and was very fascinated with him also. We went back into that pet store many times and there was that bird, looking kool as can be. Before I knew it we were talking about what would it be like to have one. We decided that we really wanted him but the price was so high, so he went on layaway. We would go visit and Bryan disappeared many times even though  I knew where he was because he'd come home with holes in his shirt from where the bird would try and pull at his buttons. Bryan would go back to the pet store just to bond with the bird.  It was a scary time because we just weren't sure, what would happen if this bird was more than we could handle. We needed a place for the little guy to come home to so we bought all the stuff we needed wow another big purchase, didn't know that we would need just about the biggest cage I ever saw. Once all that was done we just couldn't wait to bring him home, we were all excited. So January 12, we brought home our AFRICAN GREY. The Grey's life span is like 80 years, even been recorded at 100 yrs. I can't begin to tell you what a joy he has been. He's very attached to Bryan and he can't stand our 11 year old daughter, but she tries to tease him. As for me, I take care of his needs, cleaning the cage, feeding, fresh water and guess what if he can reach me he'll pull my hair and does this "WooHoo" sound. But he will get on my hand, if its covered; I just can't touch him like Bryan can. He's learning new words all the time and at the end of this page I'll share with you some of them. When he needs to potty he'll tell you "Wiggle" then he shakes that bottom and goes, he got the wiggle part from us trying to teach him to wiggle on the paper. By the way we named him TUX after Linux software. Tux is great company and had provided us with lots of laughter, he seems to know just what to say at the right time. If the phone rings he'll say hello, if you walk away from his cage leaving the room he'll tell you bye. He eats just about anything, he'll eat dinner with us at night and loves mash potatoes, but if he could he'd probable live on junk food, his favorite chip is Cheese Doodles.   At about 6:00 pm Tux will start yelling "nite nite"  but we wait until 6:30 or 7.

For my Birthday April 2002 Bryan bought me a little Senegal Parrot.  I guess he knew that Tux was never going to warm up to me and I needed something a little smaller. We call the Senegal Tallie and I say she's a girl.  Senegal's have an average life span of 30 years. She is very much my baby and so attached to me.  She has picked up a few words from Tux and even learned her name.  Tux has let her know right off that he's the boss...It's funny because when Tallie is screaming Tux will say "Tallie be quiet" or "Hush Up Tallie."

Well I know that this may have been a lot of reading but I'm very proud of my little ones and the joy they bring. It is a lot of work and time, I say that they are just like kids, the only difference is you don't have to take them everywhere but they need that same love and attention as a child. They are not for everyone but in our case we are very much in love with them.

The Greys can have a big vocabulary, I've even heard that one could recite poetry. Tux is learning all the time. Here a some that he knows.
