On June 6th, 1944, America and Britain, with Canadian, French, and Allied troops made the single largest amphibious invasion in history..
D-day
Within hours of the invasion, one oral report tells of a man who is hit in the head…. He looks at his buddy and says, “ I’m dying… but we’re going to win this f**king war aren’t we? You’re damn well f**king A we will!” He was dead less than a minute later. How far beyond the call can you go than that?
When the world wakes up on the morning of May 28th…. Think on that. For six years, millions of men, women, and children woke up wondering if they’d lose a loved one that day… Many didn’t wake up. We sit on the results of their work, sacrifice, and successes. And yet we take it for granted. How many truly thank their grandparents and parents for what they’ve given up for you to be able to wake up in this world? We could all be in the thrall of Nazi’s, under the command of the Japanese Empire, or even any of a number of tyrants and cruel dictators. Yet we hardly give it a thought. In high school I remember reading the growing list of casualties in the gulf war.. and tried to enlist… But so many cared less…. It wasn’t here. But what if? What if the people of the 40’s didn’t want to be bothered? What if they were apathetic and hopeless?
A house painter once believed that his Aryan race would be the perfect human, and that anyone else was weak… And what happened? The weak rose up in a mass of righteous fervor and threw down the strong…. Where is that today? Though no powerful dictator is trying to conquer the world, where is the patriotism that is our heritage? We live in a age of easy living and quick fixes.
Think today, if someone were truly set out to rule the world.. how many of today’s youth would care? How many would stand aside and allow atrocities and cruelty to win? You have been given a life on the blood of others..
Maybe, it’s time we said thank you to those who gave up so much, so that we could live our lives in relative peace and ignorance of true holocaust. Maybe it’s time we actually celebrated a Memorial day.
It’s not just a day of picnics and parties… it’s a day of remembrance. A day to think on the past, and dream of the future. A day to say thank you.
But of course, I’m an idiot. |
