Samuel's wife Bertha was the daughter of
Eliza Jane Varner and Henry Koble.  She is shown here with the same little girl who is standing above, Gladys Gilbert, who is my great aunt (sister of my grandfather Harvey Gilbert).
  My grandfather spoke
Pennsylvania Dutch or German. He learned the language from his mother Bertha Koble who learned it from her mother Eliza Varner.   My family is not related to the Amish but my grandfather could speak to them.  I would often go along with my grandparents when they would buy fresh eggs, meats and produce from local Amish farms.  I believe that my branch of the Gilbert family are hybrid Pennsylvania Dutch
My grandpap never taught any of his five boys Dutch because he felt they only needed to speak English.
My direct ancestors are buried at
Woodlawn and Church hill

One of Samuel and Bertha's children was Harvey Gilbert (my grandfather)  Here he is shown with my grandmother Stella Rose.
Some information I've discovered about the surname: Gilbert is said to be a Saxon name from Geele meaning "Yellow" or "Bright".   The Gilbert surname is listed in the DOMESDAY book.  Some sources list the surname as being CORNISH.
The surname Gilbert  is listed as a Sept of the Scottish Clan BUCHANAN.  It is also a FRENCH surname.  The operas of GILBERT AND SULLIVAN were very poplar.  There is a condition known as GILBERT'S SYNDROME and there were islands in the pacific named  GILBERT ISLANDS .
There are many Gilberts listed in early
NEW ENGLAND back around the time of the FIRST SETTLEMENTS .   If I am  connected to any of these, who knows??? But they are all interesting facts about the surname.
As for my own documented family history, we are located in Pennsylvania.  I have gotten back as far as the Civil War, finding John Gilbert as my oldest ancestor.  I'm sending for his pension file from the National Archives and hopefully will learn more from that information.  I know from reading his OBIT that he was buried under the supervision of the G.A.R.

John Gilbert married Lydia Zettle and they had many children including my great grand father, Samuel Gilbert who married Bertha Koble.  This is Samuel  with their twins Nora and Dora and daughter Gladys.
