Nicholas Brendon as Xander Harris
Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg
Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase
and Anthony Stewart Head as Rupert Giles

Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest
Original Airdate: 3/10/97
Written by Joss Whedon, Part 1 directed by Charles Martin Smith, Part 2 directed by John T. Kretchmer.
Guest Stars: Mark Metcalf as The Master, David Boreanaz as Angel, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Brian Thompson as Luke, Ken Lerner as Principal Flutie, Julie Benz as Darla, Eric Balfour as Jesse.
Summary: Buffy Summers and her mother move to Sunnydale to start a new life, but Buffy is dismayed to see that she cannot escape her destiny. She meets her Watcher Giles, a mysterious man named Angel, and new friends Willow and Xander, who help her stop the Harvest and prevent the Master from walking the earth.
Highlight(s): Xander skateboarding into the railing upon seeing Buffy; Willow tricking Cordelia into deleting her computer assignment, and the gang having the "earth is doomed" conversation, which they will have again in the series finale, and of course the first meeting of Buffy and Angel.
Quote of the week: CORDELIA: Willow! Nice dress! Good to know you've seen the softer side of Sears.
Fun Facts: Although the original pilot episode followed the same basic plot as Welcome to The Hellmouth/The Harvest, Angel was not in it, Darla died, and Willow was played by Riff Reagan, who did not work in the role and was recast.
Comments: This is probably the best first episode of a series ever. The characters are all great, the acting is superb, and the plot is unique and intruiging. The fighting and graphics are a little iffy, but it is a solid start.
Rating: 9.5/10

The Witch
Original Airdate: 3/17/97
Written by Dana Reston, directed by Stephen Cragg
Guest Stars: Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Elizabeth Anne Allen as Amy Madison, Robin Riker as Catherine Madison.
Summary:Buffy tries out for the cheerleading squad, but things get ugly when a witch starts eliminating the competition.
Highlight(s):Buffy throwing the cheerleader across the room.
Quote of the week:XANDER: I laugh in the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away.
Fun Facts:Buffy's cheerleading costume is later worn by Dawn during Him. This marks the first appearance of Elizabeth Anne Allen as Amy the witch, who will recurr on the series through season 7.
Comments:This is just a really fun episode. It showed the humor of the series very well. It is also the first time dealing with witches, a subject that will become more prominent in the later years. The effects of the spell on Buffy are hilarious. Just a very fun episode.
Rating:8.5/10

Teacher's Pet
Original Airdate: 3/25/97
Written by David Greenwalt, directed by Bruce Seth Green
Guest Stars:David Boreanaz as Angel, Musetta Vander as Natalie French, Ken Lerner as Principal Flutie, Jackson Price as Blayne Mall, William Monaghan as Dr. Gregory.
Summary:Xander falls for the substitute teacher, who turns out to be a preying mantis.
Highlight(s):Angel giving Buffy his jacket, and Xander's jealousy.
Quote of the week: Xander: Well, he's buff! She never said anything about him being buff!
Willow: You think he's buff?
Xander: He's a very attractive man! How come that never came up?
Fun Facts:This is the first of many times that Xander dates someone who isn't quite human.
Comments:This is a pretty good episode. The plot is different and fun, but not the most entertaining episode ever.
Rating:6.5/10

Never Kill A Boy On The First Date
Original Airdate:3/31/97
Written by Rob Des Hotel and Dean Batali, directed by David Semel
Guest Stars:Mark Metcalf as The Master, David Boreanaz as Angel, Christopher Wiehl as Owen Thurman, Andrew J. Ferchland as The Anointed One, Geoff Meed as Andrew Borba.
Summary:Buffy's date is interrupted by a prophecy telling of the rising of an Anointed One who will serve the Master.
Highlight(s):The morbidness that is Owen.
Quote of the week:XANDER: So you just went home?
BUFFY: What was I supposed to do? Say to Owen, 'Sorry I was late, I was sitting in a cemetery with the librarian waiting for a vampire to rise so I could prevent an evil prophecy from coming to pass?'
XANDER: Or flat tire?
Fun Facts:The Anointed One will be a recurring character into the second season, outliving even the Master.
Comments:Another decent episode. I personally do not like Buffy dating anyone who isn't Angel, but Owen was kind of cute. There are some cute one liners in this episode too.
Rating:7/10

The Pack
Original Airdate:4/7/97
Written by Matt Kiene and Joe Reinkemeyer, directed by Bruce Seth Green
Guest Stars:Ken Lerner as Principal Flutie, Eion Bailey as Kyle, Michael McRaine as Rhonda, Brian Gross as Tor, Jennifer Sky as Heidi, Jeff Maynard as Lance, James Stephens as the zookeeper.
Summary:Xander and some school bullies are possessed by hyenas during a field trip to the zoo.
Highlight(s):The end, when Xander pretends he doesn't remember anything.
Quote of the week:Xander: We just saw the zebras mating! Thank you, very exciting...
Willow: It was like the Heimlich, with stripes!
Fun Facts:After the death of Principal Flutie, Snyder arrives a few episodes later and remains the principal until meeting a similar fate at the gang's graduation.
Comments:This is another fun episode. I personally don't like mean Xander though. And poor Herbert! He was so cute. -pouts-
Rating:6.5/10

Angel
Original Airdate:4/14/97
Written by David Greenwalt, directed by Scott Brazil
Guest Stars:David Boreanaz as Angel, Mark Metcalf as The Master, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Julie Benz as Darla, Andrew J. Ferchland as The Anointed One.
Summary:Buffy learns Angel is a vampire, and is torn between her feelings for him and her duties as a slayer.
Highlight(s):Buffy and Angel's first kiss.
Quote of the week:BUFFY: My diary? You read my diary? That is *not* okay! A diary is like a person's most private place! I... You don't even know what I was writing about! 'Hunk' can mean a lot of things, bad things. And, and when it says that your eyes are 'penetrating', I meant to write 'bulging'.
ANGEL: Buffy...
BUFFY: And 'A' doesn't even stand for 'Angel' for that matter, it stands for... 'Achmed', a charming foreign exchange student, so that whole fantasy part has nothing to even do with you at all...
Fun Facts:Before kissing, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz both ate gross foods. Darla dies, and doesn't reappear until 3 years later, during the season 1 Angel finale.
Comments:This is just a great episode. The plot is the best yet, and the chemistry between SMG and DB is amazing. It is so sweet when he sleeps in her room, and of course the whole diary rant. And we finally find out Angel's story! A classic episode.
Rating:9.5/10

I Robot, You Jane

Guest Stars:Robia LaMorte as Jenny Calendar, Chad Lindberg as Dave, Jamison Ryan as Fritz.
Summary:Willow falls in love on the internet, but it turns out to be a demon that was accidentally released online.
Highlight(s):Giles confessing why he loves books so much.
Quote of the week:Ms. Calendar: You're here again? You kids really dig the library, don't you?
Buffy: We're literary.
Xander: To read makes our speaking English good.
Fun Facts:This is Robia LaMorte's first appearance as Jenny, and she will become an integral part of the Scooby gang.
Comments:This is an okay episode. The premise isn't the greatest, but it has it's moments.
Rating:6/10

The Puppet Show
Original Airdate:5/5/97
Written by Rob Des Hotel and Dean Batali, directed by Ellen S. Pressman
Guest Stars:Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Armin Shimerman as Principal Snyder, Richard Werner as Morgan, Burke Roberts as Marc.
Summary:Giles is put in charge of the school talent show, but problems begin to occur, leaving the gang to search for a killer within the cast
Highlight(s):The gang's dramatic scene at the end, and Cordelia's singing.
Quote of the week:CORDELIA: But the mood! It'll be all wrong! My song is about dignity and human feelings and personal... hygiene or something. Anyway, it's sappy, and no one is gonna be feeling sappy after all that Rock and Roll. Uhhh, what?
GILES: Oh! I'm sorry. Um, your hair, uh...
CORDELIA: There's something wrong with my hair? Ohmigod! (quickly leaves)
GILES: (to himself) Xander was right. It worked like a charm.
Fun Facts:Sid later turns up in the Chaos Bleeds video game and book. This is also the first appearance of Principal Snyder.
Comments:I love this episode. It's really fun. The "talentless" show is a hoot, love Cordelia's singing. Principal Snyder is terrific, and this is just a classic. Sid is creepy though.
Rating:9/10

Nightmares
Original Airdate:5/12/97
Written by David Greenwalt, directed by Bruce Seth Green
Guest Stars:Mark Metcalf as The Master, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Jeremy Foley as Billy Palmer, Andrew J. Ferchland as The Anointed One, Dean Butler as Hank Summers.
Summary:The nightmares of everyone in Sunnydale begin to come true.
Highlight(s):Cordelia's worst nightmare: having bad hair, and being a member of the chess club.
Quote of the week:Willow: When Buffy was a vampire, you weren't still, like, attracted to her, were you?
Xander: Willow, how can you... I mean, that's really bent! She was... grotesque!
Willow: Still dug her, huh?
Xander: I'm sick, I need help.
Willow: Don't I know it.
Fun Facts:Willow's stage fright later comes up in Restless.
Comments:This is a very interesting episode. We get to know the characters a lot better. And besides, Buffy the Vampire? You don't get that every day. However, The Ugly Man? That's a little on the lame side.
Rating:7/10

Out of Mind, Out of Sight
Original Airdate:5/19/97
Written by Ashley Gable and Tom Swyden, directed by Reza Badiyi.
Guest Stars:David Boreanaz as Angel, Armin Shimerman as Principal Snyder, Clea DuVall as Marcie Ross, Mercedes McNab as Harmony, Ryan Bittle as Mitch.
Summary:An invisible girl lashes out at students, focusing on those close to Cordelia.
Highlight(s):Cordelia's acceptance speech.
Quote of the week:Cordelia: Because you're always around when all this weird stuff is happening. And I know you're very strong, and you've got all those weapons... I was kind of hoping you were in a gang.
Fun Facts:This is the first time we find out that Cordelia isn't as happy as she seems. She also takes steps to becoming a member of the Scooby Gang.
Comments:This is a good episode. The concept is chilling, and there are some great moments. "There are no dead students here. This week." And the end is slightly weird, but kind of neat.
Rating:8/10

Prophecy Girl
Original Airdate:6/2/97
Written and directed by Joss Whedon
Guest Stars:Mark Metcalf as The Master, David Boreanaz as Angel, Kristine Sutherland as Joyce Summers, Robia LaMorte as Jenny Calendar, Scott Gurney as Kevin, Andrew J. Ferchland as The Anointed One.
Summary:A prophecy says that Buffy will face the Master, and die.
Highlight(s):Buffy's heartbreaking speech. "I'm sixteen years old. I don't wanna die."
Quote of the week:Master: You were destined to die! It was written!
Buffy: What can I say? I flunked the written.
Fun Facts:This episodes marks the first and only time that the Buffy theme song played during an episode.
Comments:This is another classic. As Joss Whedon often says, it was the first time the true potential of the show was recognized. SMG gives her best performance yet. Also, we find out that the library is on the Hellmouth, which is neat (especially to Giles). Also, Xander finally asks Buffy out, and gets rejected. Poor Xand. Overrall a terrific season finale to a terrific first season of a terrific show. That was a lot of terrifics.
