Titan Gymnasts Win Sectional
By: Michael Van Der Harst
TITAN SPORTS REPORTER - 5/4/05, 11:10pm -- Boys Gymnastics

The dream continued on Wednesday night as the Glenbrook South men's gymnastics team won the Stevenson Sectional and will head to the state meet as a team. Freshman sensation Steve Deutsch won the parallel bars with a 9.45 and the pommel horse with a 9.45. Senior Eric Campbell won the floor exercise with a 9.55. The Titans are coming off a season in which their only non-winning performance came at March 26's Rolling Meadows Invitational. They finished 5th. South used the momentum from last Thursday's conference meet victory over Glenbrook North 158.5 to 151.38 to propel them to the Sectional championship. GBS takes a week and half off before the state competition on Friday March 13 and Saturday March 14.
Deutch Sparks GBS To Cress Title

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES REPORTER (4/25/05)

Freshmen typically don't make a spectacular landing in boys gymnastics. But Glenbrook South's Steve Deutch is not a typical freshman.

Deutch finished fourth in the all-around competition at the Cress Invitational at Niles North and helped lead the Titans to the team title.

"It has been really hard adjusting to competing with all older guys,'' said Deutch, who scored 54.23. "They have so much more experience. But I have been feeling much more comfortable out there, and it has helped.''

"It is unusual for a freshman to come in and be as strong as he is,'' Glenbrook South coach Stephen Gale said. "He is a very hard worker and is self-motivated. He has very good strength and good moves with it. We are looking to have him here for the next three years.''

Deutch helped the Titans win the team title with a score of 157.24; Glenbrook North was second at 156.10, and Prospect (155.41) was third. All three teams have posted scores that could put them in contention to qualify for the state meet.

Glenbrook South will meet district rival Glenbrook North two more times in the next two weeks -- first at the conference meet on Thursday and then in the state sectionals at Stevenson on May 1.

"This is the best year we had in our program to date,'' Gale said. "We just need to stay healthy and improve on the small things.''

Elk Grove's Nick Persino won the all-around title with a 56.45 total. Glenbrook North's Ian Dennehy (55.45) was second, and Highland Park's Larry Milstein (54.31) was third.

"It was so loud out there,'' said Persino, who won the floor with a 9.60, the rings with a 9.75 and the vault with a 9.70. "It really got me pumped. ... I felt real strong on my floor routine.''

Milstein won the parallel bars with a 9.40, Dennehy won the pommel horse with a 9.70, and Spartans teammate Mike Sinsheimer won the high bar with a 9.60.
