    You are right in saying that the "Norteamericanos" had a lot to do in the disappearance of the "lengua hermosa" from that part of Asia, known as the Philippines.

    Without them, Spanish could still be the official language in the goverment, business and school, never mind that there are about 50 local dialects in the country, most of which contain a lot of spanish words in them.

    You have to credit "los Americanos" for propagating English and erasing Spanish , whom they considered as an inferior language, from the islands. It is the language of so many people whom they have defeated in the past. After they annexed California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico from Mexico, English became the official language in those states and it is a known fact that young people were actually forbidden from speaking the language of their parents. Only English was taught in schools and several generations of Mexican americans actually forgot the language.

Growing up in the Philippines, I remember watching a lot of films where the spanish "guardia civil" were always portrayed as the villains and oppressors of the Filipino people. Add that to the two novels of Jose Rizal , where the abuses of the Spanish friars were so vividly portrayed , and the Filipinos would have nothing more to do with Spain. It's a miracle that the Ayalas and the Sorianos were allowed to stay in the islands. Maybe because they considered themselves more Filipinos than Spaniards.

    Yendo de nuevo a las Filipinas, los americanos propagaron el inglés estableciendo un sistema escolar público extenso donde fue enseñado a las masas, haciéndole lengua oficial del gobierno y esforzándose por mostrar la era colonial española como algo malvado. Creciendo en las Filipinas, recuerdo ver muchas películas donde el "guardia civil" español fue retratado siempre como malvado y opresor de la gente filipina. Agregue eso a las dos novelas de Jose Rizal, donde los abusos de los frailes españoles fueron retratados tan vivamente, y los filipinos no querrán nada con España. Es un milagro que a los Ayalas y los Sorianos se les permitiese permanecer en las islas. Quizá porque se consideraban más filipinos que españoles.

    How to bring Spanish back to the Filipinos? It's a big task, considering that english is so ingrained in their brain, brought about by the widespread use of the language in the media- TV, newspapers, movies, comics-, you name it, and it is written in English. Why they cannot even speak their national language ,Tagalog, without mixing it with english, a corruption known as Taglish. Instead of saying " Ibig kong ipaunawa sa iyo", they will say "ibig kong iexplain sa iyo" and many others.

Es una gran tarea, considerando que el inglés está tan inculcado en su cerebro, a causa del extenso uso del lenguaje en la media -TV, periódicos, películas, tebeos-, usted lo cita, y se escribe en inglés. Por eso no pueden incluso hablar su lengua nacional, tagalog, sin mezclarlo con el inglés, una corrupción conocida como taglish. En vez de decir " Ibig kong ipaunawa sa iyo", dirán "ibig kong iexplain sa iyo" y muchas otras.

    It is clear they have to take the teaching of Tagalog and Spanish more seriously and, to do that, they have to have many competent teachers in these languages. This has to be started at a younger age, before 13 years when the brain's neuronal wiring becomes more established . Lastly, the media is a very powerful tool for learning the language.

    I remember learning english in the Philippines not thru the classrooms, but by watching a lot of american movies of Audie Murphy, John Wayne and the likes. A spanish programming should be started on the televisions- to teach, to propagate and to have this beautiful language be loved by the people. Also I assure you, it will be advantageous for you to know this language if someday you should plan to immigrate to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico , Miami(Florida), or to the place where I live, southern California.

    Recuerdo aprender inglés en las Filipinas no por las salas de clase, sino viendo muchas películas americanas de Audie Murphy, John Wayne y similares. Una programación del español debe comenzar en las televisiones para enseñar, propagar y hacer que esta lengua hermosa sea querida por la gente. También, le aseguro, será ventajoso para usted saber esta lengua si planea emigrar algún día a Tejas, Arizona, Nuevo México, Miami (Florida), o al lugar en donde vivo, California meridional.
