TAIWAN

1991-1992
Taiwan was my first destination in Asia and my first time abroad. When I reached Taipei, I spoke no Chinese at all, but quickly learned to get around! I got a job teaching English at a bushiban and found a room with the Peng family - then stayed for a year! At that time Taiwan was still in the throws of its own industrial revolution and not the most attractive place - it was the people that made it great.

Looking back at it, Taiwan was the beginning of a lot of things for me - a fascination with Asia and the confidence to do whatever I set my mind to.

Here is my friend Li Yen Ping at Shihto Shan (Lion's Head Mountain). The climb up a thousand steps is worth it to see the architecture of this temple. However, mind your step - on those stairs I came in close contact with a wild and poisonous electric green snake!

This is the only really beautiful park in urban Taipei - Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. Inside the main building is a HUGE statue of Chiang. Appropriately, there is a sign outside advising that "slovenly attire will not be permitted!"

Hsing Tien Gong is one of Taipei's many ornate Taoist temples hidden down back streets. This photo is of a well-used incense burner.

Taiwan's national day is called "Double Ten Day" because it takes place on October tenth. A large portion of the celebratory parade is made up of a "don't mess with us" armament display.
Nick's farewell limo and champagne seem to have got to him and Veronica.

Well I don't think this stall owner in Wu Lai is very impressed with my Russian impression.

My friends Tom and Joey were married in Tao Yuan and now live in Seattle.

The National Palace Museum houses some of the Mainland's greatest treasures - I wonder what will become of them if Taiwan is reunited with the Mainland?
