Even before the Davy Crockett television series aired, there was the song "The Ballad of Davy Crockett", which premiered on the very first episode of Disneyland, October 27 of 1954. It was placed there as a coming attraction for the upcoming Crockett trilogy. The most amazing thing about this soon-to-be-hot, ten-million, best-record-seller was that it was written as an afterthought, filler, needed as padding for extra running time. Tom ("I never wrote a song in my life") Blackburn, the Crockett script writer, and George Bruns, Disney's head staff songwriter/ composer, slapped it together in about twenty minutes. Walt Disney himself hit upon the idea of using the song as a device to help move the story along saying, "The lyrics will pick it up for the kids. It's what I call a comic book approach."

In the first six months of 1955, nearly seven million copies of the song were sold, making it the fastest-selling record up to that time. It spent six months on the Hit Parade, and was recorded by Bill Hayes (a now veteran soap opera actor) who had the most popular version, at #1 on the charts for five weeks, with two-and-a-half million copies sold. Fess Parker, our Davy Crockett, reached # 5 with a million copies sold and Tennessee Ernie Ford reached #10. Eddie Arnold, Fred Waring, the Sons of the Pioneers, Steve Allen, Mitch Miller, Rusty Draper and Burl Ives were also among the 41 separate recorders to cover the song. Composer George Bruns later added, "The irony of it was that most people thought it was an authentic folk song that we uncovered and updated."
