        Air Travel Demand Modeling (Bangladesh)

Air Travel Demand Model for Domestic Air Transportation

I. BACKGROUND

In 1993 The Government of Bangladesh has decided to open the domestic air transport market for private companies. Domestic air transport sector is always been a loosing sector and subsidized from Biman's International operation since independent. To reduce this deficit and achieve a competitive market, Government lastly decided to start Deregulation especially in domestic sector.

II. PURPOSE

Our study purpose was to analyze the demand and supply condition in domestic sector and to find the critical factor that influence the air transport business.

III. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELING

Research was completed in three stage Demand Model; Supply Model for both Private and Public (Biman) Airlines; Preliminary development of "Hub-Spoke" system for South Asian Region and Dhaka Airport.

IV. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

For the development of demand model, we use "City-Pair Model" which first introduced by Adib Kanafani. For the calculation we applied "Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis". Parameter values are estimated for different explanatory variables used in the model.

V. RESEARCH RESULTS

Till now we have published several journal papers and attend two conference to present our research output. First journal published in Bangladesh Engineering Institute Journal and second one is waiting to publish in Transport Research Journal in U.S.A. I have attended the first conference in Tokyo, Japan held in 17th march 1998 in JSCE (Japanese Society of Civil Engineering). Last November 1999, we attended our second conference in Bangkok, Thailand in Civil and Environmental Engineering Conference organized by AIT (Asian Institute of Technology).

          Liberalization of Air Transportation

Potential of Privatization of Air Transportation
The marked economic growth of the South Asian countries is paving the way for the development of a potential Hub and Spoke air transport system for this region. This paper addresses the present condition and future potentiality of air transportation in the South Asia region by analyzing the scope of potential Hub-and-Spoke air transport system, the level of facilities, the air travel passenger and freight demand structure, and the network shape and its configuration. The model developed to predict the passenger and freight demand in South Asia relates certain regional economic variables. Potentialities of hub cities are evaluated by ranking the airports competing each other for the gateway for Europe and Far East. Geographic potentiality are investigated using location criteria which illustrates that hub cities in west and east part of the region have immense positional advantages saving an operators fuel costs as much as $ 12.5 million annually. A network shape index, which is a measure of airlines interregional network concentration based on Herfindahl-Hirschman index, is described. Finally, a model developed for major airline's profitability index to show the overall returns to scope and density based on the integrated regional network shape. The developed model can be used to explore the potential for Hub-and-Spoke system and to achieve better financial performance for South Asian air transport operators over the next two decades.

          South Asian Airline Safety

Airline Safety Strategies in South Asia
Airline safety in South Asia sparked after a series of aircraft disaster during post-deregulation period. Many of private scheduled and commuter airline faces a hard time.
