CHAPTER 13

Elizabeth was sitting on her bed. A box was in front of her. She was still in her pajama, her slippers under her legs. She was in a self-destructive mood. The box contained all of her souvenirs from her years with Lucky. All the important and meaningless stuff that they shared was in that box. Today, of all day, she was looking at it. She went through hell and back, her rape, losing Hope, losing Lucky, losing Manny, but today, of all day, was the worst. There was nothing more painful for her than go through Lucky's wedding day. To her sister.

Lucky and Sarah were getting married at City Hall, with a couple of close friends and family. Elizabeth was invited, of course, but she wasn't able to go. It was too painful. The only thing Elizabeth knew about the wedding was that Sonny Corinthos arranged for Lucky to adopt Manny at the same time.

She took the first item out of the box. It was her uncle Tom's art history book from college. Inside, in the middle of the book, was a dried flower. The one Lucky gave her at their first, real date, at the no name restaurant. The second item was the little white teddy bear he won for her at the carnival.

Elizabeth opened the radio, so she wouldn't have to feel so alone. But the song that was playing broke her heart. It was like everyone was out today to make her cry.

"Went through the attic today
Found a note you had packed away
And I started reliving the past
When I saw his face
Suddenly, to my surprise
I felt a tear fall from my eyes"

She felt something hard on her hand as she reached in the box. It was the brown bank he bought for her in Canada. The ugliest thing she had ever seen. When she took it in her hands she heard something inside and she opened it. It was the key chain from Pelican Rapids.

"The heart never forgets
No the heart never forgets
You can find someone
And live your life
Put an old memory
Out of your mind
But the heart never forgets"

She found her mug, and her scarf. The writing on the mug was faded. You almost couldn't make out Lucky's handwriting anymore. She also found the brochure from the art school in New York and she looked through the pages, wondering what could've happened if she didn't have Manny to take care of, if she didn't give up on her dream for him. She still painted, she had orders for her art, but it wasn't something she went to school for.

"A face on a crowded street
An old movie on TV
A song on the radio
Can bring it all back
Years roll by
One by one
All things change
But there's always someone"

Finally, after she took almost all of the stuff out of the box, she stumbled upon two little boxes. The ones, in her mind, was hoping she had lost. The first one was the ring Lucky gave her at their first Christmas together. The ring he changed hands after they exchanged their vows in front of God on Valentine's day. She put it on her finger. It still fit. She quickly took it off and opened the second box. It was her engagement ring. The one Lucky gave her when she was pregnant with Hope. She was suppose to have the wedding band to go with it. But they never made it to the wedding. Instead, Lucky was marrying her sister supposedly to help her, although she couldn't see how he was going to accomplish that now.

"The heart never forgets
No the heart never forgets
You can find someone
And live your life
Put an old memory
Out of your mind
But the heart never forgets"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks had passed since the wedding. Elizabeth hadn't seen Sarah nor Lucky. They came to get Manny's stuff that same day, but Elizabeth refused to go downstairs and see them. Instead, Manny came up to her room and she held him tight, asking --no, begging-- him to remember how much she loved him, no matter what, and that she would always be there for him. He just had to call. The boy told her that no matter what Sarah said, in his mind, Lizzie was his mother, no one else, forever.
She was startled when the phone rang.
"-Hello?
-Elizabeth, it's Lucky
-Oh hi Lucky. She tried to sound happyy, but it didn't work
-Come down to Kelly's. I have somethinng for you
-I'm kinda busy right now--
-15 minutes, see you there"
Before she could refuse for the second time, he hung up. What could he possibly have for her? She didn't have anything to say to him. Not anymore. He chose his camp. When he said to give her a week to get her Manny back, she believed him. That was a month ago, and he had been married to Sarah for twice the time he promised her it would take. Whatever he had to tell her, she didn't want to know.
Curiosity was killing her, and before she could stop herself, she was in front of Kelly's. Lucky was sitting outside, a newspaper in front of him. She walked to the table and saw, sitting in front of Lucky, Manny, reading a comic book. She cleared her throat and both guys looked at her at the same time. Manny got up to run in her arms, and Elizabeth took a step back, thrown by the power of his embrace. She gently brushed his hair with her hand, before kneeling down in front of him.
"-Let me look at you! She said
-Lizbeth, it's only been two weeks! Thhe boy laughed
-I know but it seemed longer. I missedd you so much
-I missed you too"
Elizabeth took him in her arms again, holding him so close to her. Finally, Manny let go and she sat down next to Lucky. He smiled at her, asking if she liked her surprise. All she could do was nod, with a big lump in her throat. Now she knew what Lucky must have felt knowing she slept with Nikolas. She was feeling the same way, knowing he was sleeping with Sarah. Before they could talk, Manny looked up and shouted with pleasure. Elizabeth and Lucky turned around to see what got Manny so excited.
"-UNCLE NIKOLAS, YOU'RE BACK!"
Manny ran in his arms at the same strength he did Elizabeth. Nikolas took him in his arms and got up, with Manny hanging on to his neck. He leaned down and kissed Elizabeth on the cheek, not knowing how to act with Lucky. He hadn't seen him since his brother came to his house to beat the hell out of him.
Lucky was looking at Nikolas, jealousy eating him from the inside out. Finally, Lucky reached out and Nikolas shook his hand. That took everything Lucky had inside, but he told Elizabeth what happened between her and Nikolas was part of his past, it was time he started acting like that. Before he could say anything, a little boy came to Nik's side, before sitting down on Elizabeth's lap. Manny was talking to the boy so fast, Lucky couldn't understand the half of it, but the boy understood because he nodded, laughing. Finally, Lucky figured it out.
"-Oh My God! He said. That can't be! Nikolas, this can't be who I think it is
-Yes it is. You remember him?
-He is too damn big to be your son! Hee was so small last time I saw him!
-He was 4 years old Lucky, now he's goiing on 7.
-Hey there Cowboy, Lucky said, I'm yourr--
-Uncle Lucky, I know. Father talks a llot about you. Aunt Lesley Lu does, too.
-I can't believe you got so big!
-Hey I'm big too! Said Manny, jealous<
-Elizabeth, I'm glad you are here, I haave a big favor to ask you. Said Nikolas
-Leave him with me. No problem.
-For the night, too?
-Sure, we'll have a slumber party, righht Alek?
-Really? Asked the boy, his face lightting up
-Of course. Remember last time?
-Do I! We stuffed our faces, watched mmovies, played games! Is Manny coming too?
-I don't think so sweetie, he lives witth his mommy now, answered Elizabeth, sad.
-Well, I have to go. Thanks Elizabeth.. Aleksei Sergei Kir Cassadine, you better behave
-When doesn't he? Asked Elizabeth, lauughing. Bye Nikolas
-Bye, good to see you again Lucky
-You too. Manny, why don't you take Allek inside, ask Tammy to fix you both the BIGGEST sundaes on the face of this earth? Said Lucky once Nikolas was gone
-Thanks uncle Lucky! Said Alek, all exxcited
-He's not always that generous, said Maanny. He just wants to talk to Lizbeth alone. Come on cousin, let's go"
Elizabeth and Lucky laughed and saw the boy wrestled about who would get in first. Lucky smiled at Elizabeth, and she tried her best to smile back. She couldn't.
"-Do you still work at home? Lucky asked
-Yes I do. Now I just might start to wwork outside, since I have no one to take care of at home anymore.
-Well, it just so happens I need someonne to watch Manny when I'm at work and I was wondering if you were up for the job. Also --he said, raising his hand when she tried to talk-- if you take the job, you have to move in with us because sometimes I take the night shift. What do you say?"
