Robert showed up at City hall as soon as the door opened, holding a big brown envelop. He stopped at the clerk's desk and cleared his throat.
"-Excuse me, I'm here to change my name?
-Of course sir, there will be some papeers to sign and of course, a fee.
-Ok, but I'm changing my name back to mmy birth name.
-Still not a problem. I'll just need yyour social security number, and your date of birth"
Robert gave him what he asked, and started playing with the hair on the back of his neck, purely a Lucky nervous tick. When he saw the clerk's face change, he knew the troubles were starting. Good thing he came prepared.
"-Sir? It's written here that Lucas Lorenzo Spencer Junior died April 16th 1999.
-And I have all the papers here provingg that he didn't.
-I'll go get my supervisor, because I'mm not allowed to change that"
Robert prepared all the papers and waited. This had to work, or he would have a very long court battle in front of him. Lani was still at the hospital, but was due to be released any day, and there was no way he was letting her to go a foster home. 17 years ago he had promised himself never to be Lucky Spencer again. There was only one person he loved enough to go back, and she was a helpless little child. His little girl. The supervisor came back and Robert smiled.
"-My employee tell me you want to prove you are a man that died 2 decades ago?
-I am. Here I have all the medical reccords showing I am this man. "
Robert took the papers out and started showing them to the supervisor.
"-Here is Lucas Junior's birth certificate, saying Lucas Lorenzo Spencer Senior is the father and Laura Vining Webber Baldwin Spencer is the mother. This chart shows my DNA and blood tests. You will see that the DNA matches blood taken from Lucas Senior and Laura, as well as a paternity test and a maternity test. Lastly, this is Lucas Junior's last medical records, showing the finger prints, blood type, dental and bone structures, and this is my medical records, showing all the tests made on me last week are identical to the ones on Lucas Junior's medical chart, you also have a psychological evaluation made on me last week to show that I am not hallucinating, made by Doctor Gail Baldwin, and all the other tests were performed by Doctor Monica Quartermaine, supervised by Stefan Cassadine, CEO of the Port Charles General Hospital.
-You truly came prepared, didn't you?
-The problem is, Mr. Jackson, that I caan't change that, and I can't say that you are the man you say you are. A judge has to decide that. So the only thing you can do, it ask for an hearing. I'm sorry"
Robert took all the information to meet a judge off court and returned to the hospital to visit with Lani. He had promised her he would take her home, that Elizabeth's betrayal would not impact on her life and he intended to keep his word. He changed his name once, disappeared into the thin air, he could do it again. Kidnapping a baby was easy and he would have no regrets doing it. But he hoped with all his heart that it wouldn't come to that. Not with Lani.
The next day he received a call from the Honorable Judge Newman, telling him he had an appointment with him later that same afternoon. Robert smiled and took the phone back after the conversation, and dialed a number he knew he would get an answer. And he did.
"-Luke's
-Hey dad, you busy?
-Never for you Cowboy, what's up
-Who did you call?
-Um, they say I'm the senile one. You called me
-I mean for me to have a meeting with aa judge this afternoon dad. Robert laughed
-Moi? Luke asked, shocked
-Yeah, you.
-All right, all right, I called Sonny. But don't worry, he didn't buy the judge, he just said you needed to see him as soon as possible.
-Thanks dad. I owe you one
-No you don't. I want to see Lani withh you as much as you do"
Robert smiled at the end of the line. Luke was trying so hard to make everything right for his son and grandchildren. As if he was trying to right the wrongs he did with his years of black dealings.
"-So let me know how it goes
-I will. As soon as I get home, I'll ggive you a call
-I love you cowboy
-I love you too, dad"
He hung up and went to the hospital. Standing near his daughter, he told her his meeting with the judge, and he renew his promise to always be there for her. He even said, if the judge didn't give him his name back, he would then petition for adoption and if that didn't work, Lucky and Kiara would. No one would take her away from them. And if all hell failed, he would pack and run.
He walked in the judge's office, after he dried his palms on his pants. He was wearing his work clothes, suit and tie, and he smiled at the old man sitting on the other side of the desk before he extended his hand.
"-Lucas Spencer
-Theodore Newman, have a seat. Now, teell me what it is that I can do for you.
-Actually, it's a long story
-I have all the time in the world. Ansswered the judge, sitting back with his hands behind his head."
Robert cleared his throat and smiled. This wouldn't be easy.
"-All right, here it goes. When I was 17, my fiancee got kidnapped. When I found her, I got into a fight with the kidnapper and the gun went off. I was disfigured and left for dead. When I came to, I was in another city with no recollection of who I was or my former life, and it was only a year later that my memory came back to me. But by that time, I was a father, and I had a knew life. I decided to keep my new name and my new life.
-What made you change your mind?
-I came back to Port Charles two years ago, with my daughter. I met with my former fiancee and she got pregnant with my child. A little girl who is still in the hospital. Elizabeth, her mother, left without leaving an address where to reach her, and on the birth certificate, she wrote my old name as father, and the doctors refuse to let my daughter come home with me, since I am not Lucas Spencer, legally. So now my little girl is protected by the social services until I can prove I am her father. For the sake of her, I decided to go back to my old name
-And you have all the papers proving yoou are this man?
-Yes your honor.
-May I see them?"
Once again, Robert got all the papers out, plus the one he had the doctor signed about Elizabeth leaving the hospital a couple of weeks ago, never to be seen again, with no phone calls and no written note.
The judge took his time to examined the papers, and which each passing minute, Robert grew nervous. What if he denied his petition? What if he refused to see what was right in front of him? Now that Robert tasted a family again, now that he could hang out with his adult sister, his father, his mother and mostly, his son, would he be able to give it all up again for Lani's sake? It would be the hardest thing he would ever have to do, but he would, once again, for his daughter.
"-With everything you've presented me, I have no choice. Was the judge's final words"
Robert walked out of the hospital with the biggest smile on his face. He was holding the baby car seat, with a sleeping baby in it. In his other hand was all the papers, saying he had now soul custody of baby Webber, now known as Lani Lesley Lu Spencer. The judge granted him everything he asked and since he left his office yesterday, Robert had a permanent smile on his face. He looked down at his daughter and saw her smile in her sleep. She was now 2 months old, and he missed the first two months of her life. He would miss no more.
Elizabeth would have the surprise of her when she finally returned home, along with everyone else. Because now Lucky Spencer was back. With a vengeance.
