The Good Earth
By Pearl S. Buck
I loved this book and my librarian actually said she liked it too and was glad to see a resurgence of Pearl Buck's classic.  Thank you Oprah! This book is about a poor farmer, Wang Lung, in China and how his life progresses with his simple wife, O-lan.  Throughout his life he continues to acquire more and more land and gains more and more wealth until he buys the great house of Hwang.  His children become educated and an important part of society. This is a wonderful story that everyone should read.
House of Sand and Fog
By Andre Dubus III
This book drove me crazy.  I got the worst sinking feelings as I read it which is probably a compliment to the author.  It takes a good writer to bring out any type of feelings in the reader. It's been a while since I read it, but there are a couple stories in this book. There is the American who loses her home which is bought by a Cuban family.  The American turns into a stalker as she tries to get her house back and winds up taking the Cuban family hostage.  Things just continue to get bad and worse until there is a shooting. I'm not quite sure why Oprah would pick this book, but it does stir up some serious emotions and is not a wasted read.
Drowning Ruth
By Christina Schwarz
What's up with Oprah?  She needs some happy, feel-good books! Once again, strong in emotion, but not a heart-warming story. I can barely remember what this book was about, but I do remember going "Ooo!" alot. It's one of those stories that starts in the present and works it's way backwards as it uncovers dark secrets.
