I remember when I was a young girl.  I spent a lot of time with my grandparents.  My mom was a single parent so my grandparents became co-parents.  Honestly, I was happier with my grandparents.  Anyway, I remember one day my brother was at my grandparents house with me.  Just like all siblings we got into a fight and I, being the little sister, ended up crying.  My grandfather seperated us and I was set on the porch until I stopped crying.  Crying was unacceptable.

When I was a teenager I lost my Dad to cancer and four years later lost my grandfather to heart complications.  In between those four years I lost my first crush to a drunk driver.  I wasn't physically hurt like when my brother hit me, but I was emotionally destroyed.  I locked myself in my bedroom and cried the pain out of me until I was numb.

Many, many years later I found myself stretched across an operation table as my first child was surgically extracted from my stomach after 22 hours of unproductive, induced labour.  As I laid there looking at my beautiful son, warm streaks raced down my cheeks.  This was the first time I had ever cried in pure happiness in 29 years.  I never thought it could happen.

Now-a-days with two children, who are 19 months apart, and a husband who frequently travels, I find that crying relieves a lot of pent up stress.  A good cry may produce puffy eyes, but afterwards a sense of calm rationale prevails.  Women cry for many different reasons.  We cry in pain, in loss, in confusion, in happiness and in times when there just isn't any other thing to do.  Our tears are our own and we use them how we feel.  Please don't try to understand and please don't try to help.  Quiet sympathy.  Solitude.  A gentle hug.  A sweet smile.  Just keep in your head, sometimes women just need to cry.
