Meditation has been defined as exercising the mind in comptenplation, or to plan mentally, even unknowingly. The key to unlocking psychic gifts and deeper meditative states already exists in our mental code. Meditation techniques come to us from many times and countires. Some call it prayer, others communing, but whatever it is called, taking time to bring our spirits back to centre and focus our minds is one of the most important disicplines we can bring into our lives and magickal training. All meditation takes it patience and practice. Some traditions do not seek to focus on anything in particular, while others find it more helpful to centre on one issue or thought. Sometimes, when taking the latter approach, it is helpful to combine it with some sort of visualization. There are many varied techniques of meditation and it all comes down to finding what works best for you. However, most techniques begin with a slowed, rythmic breathing, combined with a focus on an object (such as a candle). A common problem for beginners is that of distraction. You notice your foot is falling asleep, or your nose begins to itch, the phone rings, anything that will distract you from your goal. This is common because you are trying to train your mind, which is generally busy doing many things at once, to concentrate on a certain object for a specific result. Try not to get frustrated; keep trying to get past that point. With practice, you will become distracted less and less and your meditative states will deepen. Remember to take your time also. Don't rush things. Be sure not to get up too quickly and run around afterwards. This will most likely give you a headache and undo all the good you just did. It is a good idea to take notes on any unusual feelings or vision you had in a journal for this express purpose. In this journal also write on how productive you thought your meditation was. Also, set aside a certain time each day to meditation and be sure to stick to it. I have given some guided metitations below. These can be used alone or in a group setting. If you are doing them alone it is helpful to tape record them and play them while you meditate. If you are using them with a group, one person can read the material for the whole group. |
