Town Areas: Buddhist Temple: a 25 minute walk from the Hostel on the hilltop with a panoramic view of the Sandakan town. The Central Market: is a zoo of bustling activities of people buying fresh produce, fruits, delicacies and others. Agnes Keith's House: an Amerivan writer who lived in Sandakan from 1930 to 1942. She wrote a book about Sabah titled " Land Below The Wind". The wooden bungalow is worth a visit for it's unique designed and past architecture. St Michael's Church: situated at Elton Hill, this beautiful granite church was built in 1893 and took twenty years to complete. A reminder of Sandakan's colonial past. Japanese Cemetery: a monument and remains of japanese soldiers who died during world war 2. Masjid Jamek: sits on a hilltop overlooking the town centre, it's quaint architecture was designed based on harmony of islamic elements. Australian Memorial: dedicated to Australian prisoner of war (POW) who died at the Sandakan POW camp and death marches in Borneo during world war 2. Berhala Beach: this beautiful island across the bay has a striking cliffs and a small secluded beach. |

Outside of Towns: Crocodile Farm: at mile 8 on the way to Sepilok, a fascinating sights of crocs, how they were breed and skin. Exported overseas for shoes,belt and other garments made of crocodile skin. Other animals can be seen including Honey Bear, Python Snake and Iguana. Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary: the world's largest orang utan sanctuary. Witness how baby orangs are rehabilitated back into the wilds. Feeding time: 10:00am and 3:00 pm. Turtle Islands: one of the most important turtle breeding spot in the world and designated as a marine park. Green and Hawkbill Turtles come ashore to lay eggs 365 nights a year. Gomantong Caves: described by WWF as " the best managed edible bird nest cave in the world." Two caves, simud putih and simud hitam produce this precious chinese delicacy. The nest is from the saliva of the swiftlets birds and fetch up to US$2000 per kilo and exported overseas. Harvest time is between February/April then between July/September where you can witness collectors in action in a dangerous operation that only use rattan ladders, ropes and poles attached together. Kinabatangan River: home to the largest concentration of wildlife in the whole of Malaysia, possibly even South East Asia. Glimpse of the rare Proboscis Monkey which can only be found in Borneo are guaranteed. Others are wild Orang Utan, Wild Pigs, Hornbills, Crocodiles, Otters, huge Monitor Lizards and many others ... |
