Generally I am a researching romantic! I love to spend hours learning silly useless trivia and facts that no one else on the planet would give two cents to know. Give me a computer and send me on my little search engine happy way and I will come back with all sorts of info to set your naptime ajoy. Our wedding plans were no different. Kirk's heritage is Scandinavian and the whole Norse theme was something I began to heavily research and along the way considered that I could include alot of my Irish heritage since Celtic is closely similar.
Looking into places that would be a beautiful setting in October in Michigan, was a small hurdle. I love botanical gardens, so one of the first thoughts I had to research was in this area. I thought it made perfect sense... Indoors, a warm greenhouse area with built in flowers, What could be more perfect on a winter day? The very first location I found seemed amazingly meant to be: Belle Isle Conservatory in Detroit, Michigan. Kirk's father and brother worked in Detroit, his friends could easily drive there, but the most striking point of amazement, was the first photo I located of Belle Isle.
The main conservatory is built like a huge dome. At first glance it might even be confused as "Thor's Helmet". Kirk and I both fell instantly inlove with the idea, so all that was necessary was to plan an actual date to request a reservation for the conservatory. Kirk and I had chosen October because our favorite holiday together is Halloween. It also made alot of common sense that people attending a wedding with the expectation of wearing costumes, might accept it more easily if it were close to Halloween but the earlier the warmer. We were able to level the decision more by choosing Thursday as our wedding day. In all of my research I had discovered that "Thursday" was originally named after the "Norse God of Thunder", himself and was at one time actually called "Thor's Day". Thor the mythical "God of Thunder" is also a well known comic book character which was originally used in comics drawn by Jack Kirby of Marvel Comics fame. Jack Kirby was a "king" in his own right in the industry and one of the heros in Kirk's life as well. The story line in the Thor Comics created by Kirby, had Thor originating in a world called "Asgard". Asgard is a beautiful rainbow filled land of amazing ideals... couldn't seem like a better theme for a wedding, huh? So with that thought in hand, on we went to building our dream for "An Asgardian Wedding" on the perfect Thor's Day", October 4th, 2001.
