After all those damn bannings took most of the fun cards from the format, I have been trying to revive old Extended decks that are not dead. Yet. Now most of these decks are very good, but it might bring about some good ideas for decks that might be able to win a tourney or two. If you are lucky and face crappy opponents. With the bannings in effect, many think Tinker is dead. Well, they're wrong. Sorta. I have a deck that might knock some people off balance, it is really not an awesome deck. It only can win with either an early metalworker or powering into multiple Thran Dynamos. But if you have that luck that allows you to draw your four-ofs, PLAY THIS DECK!! So, onto the decklist: Suicide Tinker 8 Island 4 Seat of the Synod 4 City of Traitors 4 Crystal Vein 4 Metalworker 4 Phyrexian Colossus 1 Karn, Silver Golem 4 Phyrexian Processor 4 Thran Dynamo 4 Voltaic Key 3 Lightning Greaves 3 Tangle Wire 3 Mindslaver 2 Mishra's Helix 1 Urza's Blueprints 1 Crucible of Worlds 4 Rush of Knowledge 2 Upheaval Sideboard: 4 Chill 4 Seal of Removal 4 Chalice of the Void 3 Defense Grid (If you are not sure what some of the cards above do, go to www.essentialmagic.com and use the search function) Pray for a Metalworker in the opening hand. That is the key to the explosive start. Also, the deck is called "Suicide Tinker" because all of its kill conditions require life, be it the Phyrexian Processor and Phyrexian Colossus. (odd how Phyrexia loves to steal life) And because of the lack of a Tinker, I have four-ofs of the most important artifacts and then it goes down. Something you should note, I feel the upheaval should go, but it's use against agro is just too important. And before anyone asks, the Rush of Knowledge is actually better than Stroke of Genius because of the mana constrictions this deck has. (sounds odd, but it's true.) But if you think about it, at times the Rush of Knowledge could be better. Let's say you played a second-turn Metalworker and you need more artifacts, well you can rush next turn (if you used City of Traitors) and draw one extra card than stroke could. ( 3 mana cost + 2 for X is only 2 cards drawn and the rush gets 3 off the worker) That equals a full hand, and most of the time, It's all artifacts. Plus, with a Colossus in play, it's a draw-7. (not that you would need one with a colossus in play, but stranger things have happened) But to really show how crazy this deck is, let me show you the only game where I won second turn. (I have drawn the hand below multiple times, but this is the only time it has allowed such brokeness) Me: Going first, my consists of: City of Traitors, Island, Mishra's Helix, Lightning Greaves, Metalworker, Phyrexian Processor. A really strong hand. I am playing a sligh deck and I would go for a 5-6 point processor that is not too damaging but is out of their burn range. I play the city and use it to play Lightning Greaves. Opponent: *gives me a dirty look* He proceeds to play a Bloodstained Mire, sacs it and finds a mountain and plays Cursed Scroll Me: I draw a Mindslaver. I think for a bit but then my eyes widen realizing I just won. I tell my opponet to watch carefully what I am about to do: I tap the city and play the island, tap it and use the mana to play the Metalworker. I equip the worker and use it to show Dynamo, Mindslaver, Helix and Processor. I play the Processor and pay 19 life, (going to one of course) and pump out a 19/19 token. I then proceeded to equip the greaves and swing for lethal damage because of the fetchland. Opponent: *jaw drops* Well, that sucks. So, not to say that will happen to you, but the greaves provide so much needed tempo to the deck, I feel I should run a forth, but I have problems when I draw too many and not enough spells that help me win. Another good set of matches I had was on Apprentice when I faced yet another deck that tried to keep Turboland alive. (it killed using Upheaval and Spontaneous Generation, witch I feel is a REALLY bad idea with all the weenie hate there is in Extended) Well, I remembered mostly what the matches were blow by blow, so here it is: (my favorite part is in the second match I won after he played TWO Energy Fluxes in a row.) Game 1: (I forget what was in my hand, but I remember it did NOT have a worker. I managed to draw it.) +(me) Seat of the Synod, tap, Voltaic Key. = (opponent) Forest, tap, Exploration, Island + City of Traitors, tap, Lightning Greaves. =Brainstorm at end of turn = Island, Island + Tap Seat and City, play Metalworker = In response, casts Accumulated Knowledge for 1. Spell Resolves. +Worker equiped with Greaves and taps to reveal four artifacts. Play Processor, Play 19 life (this is because I am against control) and use the other four mana to spit out a 19/19 minion, equip with Greaves and attack. =Casts Moment's Peace. = Island + Tap Metalworker, reveal four artifacts again, play Mindslaver, tap City of Traitors and slave opponent. Use Seat of the Synod and Voltaic Key to untap Metalworker and use it to reveal two artifacts. Make 19/19 token. Equip with Greaves and attack for 38 =Flashes back Moment's Peace. Plays Intuition for three Accumulated Knowledges and then concedes. 1-0: Me Game 2: ( I had Metalworker in my opening hand. Woo.) = Yavimaya Coast, tap 1 damage, Exploration, Island. + Island (I laughed at this such weak start) = Yavimaya Coast, taps out, (three land) plays Energy Flux. + City of Traitors, tap and island for Metalworker = Island, Returns two Islands for Gush, Yavimaya Coast, tap 1 damage, Exploration #2, Replays both islands. + Upkeep, tap Metalworker, reveal one artifact to keep Metalworker alive. Tap City of Traitors, Island and play Crystal Vein that kills the city to play Phyrexian Processor, play 19 life. = Play Energy Flux #2. + Upkeep: tap Metalworker, reveal four artifacts, Use four for a token and the other four for a Processor token. ( I am not sure why I did this) = Island + Upkeep, sacrifice Processor, Sacrifice the Crystal Vein and tap Island to play Tangle Wire. = Mana Leaks it. + Attack with 19/19 token = Moment's Peace = Passes Turn + Attack with token. = Flashback Moment's Peace. = Attempts to Naturalize token. Concedes. That was one of the crazyest matches I have ever played. So, short. This deck has trouble with decks that play Sereinty and creature kill that knocks out the worker but can kill crazy rogue decks that suck. it's fun, but not very good. So it is better fodder for your friends than a Pro Tour Qualifier. Next Time: MY version of Turboland that doesn't suck. Mr_Pink out. |
