Sculpture
Rock sculpture of Vajra Pani - a Tang Dynasty Buddhist guardian (Luoyang-China), 675AD, "an exceptional stone carving encapsulating the sophisticated society, confidence and strength of Tang Dynasty China (618-907AD)."

Statue of Tuthmosis III - an Egyption Pharaoh (Luxor Museum, Egypt), approx 1500BC, green greywacke, 90.5cm in height, "representing Tuthmosis as eternally youthful, confident of his divine majesty and power".

Statue of The Thinker - by Francois Auguste Rene Rodin (French, 1840-1917), 1880, bronze, 68.6 x 89.4 x 50.8cm; "What makes my thinker think is that he thinks not only with the brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils, and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes."

Pieta - by Michelangelo Buonarroti (Italian, 1475-1564), 1500, 174cm high & 195cm wide at base, marble. Finished before Michelangelo was 25 years old, regarded by many as the greatest work of sculpture ever created, "it would be impossible for any craftsman or sculptor no matter how brilliant ever to surpass the grace or design of this work, or try to cut and polish the marble with the skill that Michelangelo displayed. For the Pieta is a revelation of all the potentialities and force of the art of sculpture." (Giorgio Vasari, Lives of the Artists, 1550)

Statue of David - by Michelangelo, 1504, marble, 4.34m; "With this statue Michelangelo proved to his contemporaries that he not only surpassed all modern artists, but also the Greeks and Romans, by infusing formal beauty with powerful expressiveness and meaning."

Architecture
The Bank of China Tower, "situated at No. 1 Garden Road in the Central district of Hong Kong. This 70-story Tower reaches an overall height of 367.40m and has a total building area of 135,000 sqare meters. The Tower was designed by the well known American architect of Chinese descent, Mr. I.M. Pei. Mr. Pei took the growth of the bamboo plant as his design inspiration, symbolizing the enterprising spirit and future growth of the Bank of China as it shoots skyward section by section. Construction was started on 18th of April, 1985, and the official opening took place almost five years later on 17th May, 1990. The Tower glistens like an everchanging prismatic crystal whether viewed from the harbor, the mountains, the air, or from nearby passer-bys at ground level. After nightfall, the mirror-glass of the Tower reflects the lights of Hong Kong like a diamond."

Music
Types: Instrumental (Narada/New Age), Foreign (Pop), some Classical (Baroque), Movie Soundtracks, Trance, Alternative, Popular, Rock, Metal ... plus a little bit of everything else, a music for every mood. You will find my knowledge of the 'entertainment scene' (music, movies etc) somewhat lacking due to the long periods of time I spent overseas and in remote areas (of Canada). For the few artists and albums I found palatable the tendency was to lean more toward instrumental and foreign music. The reason primarily being lyrics: I find many song lyrics (and the ideas therein) of the English speaking-world unsatisfying. Whereas foreign music, due to my inability to understand the lyrics, I can instantly connect to the rhythm of the music and emotion of the song. Present & past, these are the names and works of the more influencial musicians I know and remember ...

Female Vocalist: Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance), Alka Yagnik ("the reigning queen of Hindi film music"), Sinead O'Connor (when she uses the full extent of her voice -- example album: The Lion & The Cobra), Bjork, Deborah Harry (her solo work & with Blondie), Dolores O'Riordan (of The Cranberries),

Male Vocalist: James LaBrie (of Dream Theater), Geoff Tate (of Queensryche), Rob Halford (of Judas Priest), Axl Rose (on Appetite For Destruction only, before his vocals were wrecked), Sebastian Bach (of Skid Row), Morten Harket (a-ha),

Female Artist (present & past): Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Chantal Kreviazuk, Bjork, Jewel, Dido, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Deborah Harry, Laura Branigan, Mitsou, Sinead O'Connor, Sheena Easton, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston, Belinda Carlisle, Sam Brown, Paula Abdul, Arethra Franklin, Kate Bush,

Favorite Philosophy Systems
Laissez-faire Capitalism: metaphysics -- existence is primary (consciousness is secondary); epistemology -- reason and logic are man’s means to knowledge; ethics -- man is a thinking, organic, mortal soul -- his life being the irreplaceable value to which all lesser goals are the means, the standard by which all lesser goals are evaluated.

Capitalism regards the individual human being as the greatest good, unlike other philosophy systems which value a King, a God or Society as their greatest good. Individual rights, the linchpin of a capitalist politics, cut across criteria of racial-national-cultural background and gender, identifying the smallest minority of a society from which to construct a just political system.

A secularized constitution is designed to protect people from the government. The proper purpose of a limited government, in turn, is to protect individual freedoms. A limited government consists of -- "the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect property and contracts from breach or fraud by others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law" (quote by Ayn Rand).

All other present-day government functions are illegitimate and should be privatized, dismantled and/or liquidated. Business should be separated from the state for all the same reasons the state should be separated from the church.

Government should be a referee -- not a player -- among competing interests in the marketplace and society. As the ultimate democracy is the capitalist marketplace, it is here -- not government -- that individuals should turn to for leadership and creative problem-solving.

Government should exist solely to carry out the limited but crucial mandate of a secularized constitution to guarantee the rights of free individuals. For an expansion of these ideas, see the July 2000 and March 2004 letters.

Confucianism: the secularized, rational & human-orientated ideas of Confucius, Mencius, Chu Hsi & other Chinese scholars. Though I disagree with Confucianism's altruism, I adore its emphasis on man, sincerity and self-cultivation (to name a few items).

Ancient Judaism: the religion of an earth-focused Jewish people, who view the human body as an organic mortal soul and the earth as man's heaven.

Favorite Concepts
Nephesh: the ancient Hebrew (Jewish) concept of man. From this ancient idea comes the inspiration for my concept of man. In a purposely simplified, secularized and science-influenced formula -- at the center of everything I think, see and do -- the body is an organic mortal soul. Man is a conceptualizing animal; his biological distinction is his rational faculty. The mind is but one characteristic of an evolutionary advanced and sophisticated organic body. The death of the body is the death of the soul.

Reason (Rationality): the faculty of man which perceives, identifies and integrates the material -- i.e., data -- provided by his senses.

Purity: i.e., Integrity to ideals/principles

Liberty: i.e., Individual Freedom
