A John Davis is listed on the 1788 tax records for Fayette County, Kentucky. There were only a few Davis surnames listed so I will repeat their names here. DAVIS, Augustin; DAVIS, Hannaniah ;DAVIS, John ;DAVIS, Joseph ;DAVIS, Patrick ;DAVIS, Richard ;DAVIS, Robert ;DAVIS, William. Also James and John Hawkins are on the same list.

The 1790 Census for Kentucky shows that John Davis did not live in Kentucky in 1788 even though he was on tax records above.

James Davis, Elizabeth Davis, and William Davis first appeared on 1790 Keutucky Census in Fayette County for May 1789.
John Davis first appeared on 1790 Kentucky Census in Fayette County for Mar 1790. Thomas Davis appeared once in Bourbon County for Jun 1791.
Benjamin Davis first appears on 1790 Kentucky census for Mar 1789.
Charles Davis and Mary Davis do not show up on 1790 Kentucky Census.

1790 Census return on James Davis helps but only gives a clue. Examples, Fayette County included Jessamine County then, was James Davis in Fayette County the same person listed at later date in same county or two different James Davis? The counties of Kentucky were being formed during that time and the census is less of less value due to those changes. Counties named in family history were Nelson and Jessamine Counties of Kentucky. The census indicates one or more of them were there but does not help distinguish which one.
