| Capstar is a new product from Novartis. It is designed to replace messy, involved flea dips and strong-smelling pesticide- and alcohol-based sprays. With a single pill, all adult fleas on a dog or cat are killed within eight hours. After two days, the active ingredient, Nitenpyram, has totally removed itself from your pet's system. It is safe to re-administer Capstar the next day, should fleas from the environment reinfest the animal. In order to break the long-term life cycle of fleas (eggs, larvae, and adults), it is recommended that Capstar be used in conjunction with Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. Capstar does not replace flea maintenance. It is an affordable and effective way to immediately deal with biting fleas. Bathing your pet will not reduce the effectiveness of Capstar. This product is available in single doses or in boxes of six tablets. |
| Advantage, from Bayer, is a topical (liquid applied to the skin) treatment designed to break the reproductive cycle of fleas in your yard and home by killing adult fleas before they can lay eggs. One application lasts your pet for one month, killing all fleas which attempt to feed off of dog or cat. Advantage is recommended for pet owners who face a possible flea problem each year but never find ticks on their pets or in the yard. If you are currently using Advantage for your dog or cat and have discovered ticks in the home environment or on your pet, then an additional product from Bayer, KillTix,is available from your veterinarian to suppliment the coverage provided by Advantage. |
| Program |
| One of the original flea control products developed was Program, from Novartis. Using the active ingredient Lufenuron, Program interrupts the life cycle of the flea by weakening the shell of the eggs adult fleas produce. (These weakened eggs are not viable, as environmental conditions destroy the developing larvae before they can hatch and become biting adults.) Program is available as a chewable flavor tab for both cats and dogs. The tablet's effectiveness lasts for one month. Program is also available for cats as an injection. However, this product is not necessarily stocked so please call us if you plan to bring your feline in for a Program injection. |
