"We are the CBC, serving Quebec." This is a local ID which seemed to act like a network ID. It would often air following local newscasts and perhaps other local programming as well, similar to how a network ID would normally air after national programming. |

CBMT ID used with the "Closer to you on 6" jingle. (1989) |
The term "local" is used loosely here considering that CBMT has repeaters throughout the entire province. And Quebec isn't exactly Canada's smallest province. Quebec-City once had its own affiliate but viewers in that market now see the same signal as Montreal. (See CKMI.)
It seems that CBMT station IDs have grown to reflect that reality. What used to be known as "CBMT 6 Montreal" eventually became "CBC 6 Montreal" and then "CBC Television, Montreal/6" and finally just "CBC Montreal." The latest CBMT IDs simply states: "You're watching CBC Montreal, broadcasting throughout Quebec." The "Closer to you on 6" ID is one of the few exceptions to the rule.
Thanks to Avi Spector for providing me with an AVI clip of an old CBMT sign-off from the late '80s (or early '90s), which is where all these images and sound clips are from. Credit for the audio montages has to go to the CBC. Thanks to Dan Kowal of CFCF-TV (ironic isn't it) for editing the sound clips for this site.
