Birdwatching safaris run during the rainy months of November to April when all migratory birds are present and when most of the birds are breeding we expect to record over 500 different kinds of birds in the habitats of Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park.
The first migratory bird to arrive in Victoria Falls every year is the black kite, which arrives in August after spending 3 months in North Africa. The rest of the migratory birds migrate from Europe, Asia and Australia. Many years ago, people in Zimbabwe relied on the migration of birds to determine seasonal changes, for example, the arrival of the black kite signals the end of winter and the arrival of cuckoos signals the start of the rainy season. Some tribes still have faith in birds; some are regarded as rain makers or fortune tellers. A ground hornbill plays a vital role in weather forecasting, by studying its behavior, people are able to tell what the weather will be like the following day. This knowledge was passed down from generation to generation.
On our safaris, we look at the role played by birds to an African society, the importance of observing bird's behavior, survival skills in the bush based on birds behavior, bird habitats, bird identification, nesting habits. We also look at the symbiotic relationship between birds and mammals.
These are 8 different bird habitats in Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park, expect to find a large variety of birds. The main habitats are riparian forest, floodlands, mixed scrub woodland, teak forest, mopane woodland and miombo as well as pans and open grasslands. We will spend most of our time viewing large birds on open grasslands, watching smaller birds in thickets or driving to far away habitats. In all the habitats we will be able to see wildlife such as elephants, antelopes, hippopotamus and many other different mammal species.
