Shatnerverse Book 4: Spectre Takes place in: 2374, one year after the events of Avenger USS Enterprise-E is assigned to a science mission in a region of plasma storms known as the Goldin Discontinuity. The USS Voyager unexpectedly reappears in the Discontinuity, and the Enterprise-E crew assumed that Voyager, which had been transported into the Delta Quadrant in 2371, had managed to return home. However, this Voyager actually came from the mirror universe and is staffed by forces from the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, who had conquered the Terran Empire in the mirror universe. Alliance forces quickly overrun the Enterprise-E and take its crew captive. |

On a visit to Earth, Kirk is taken hostage by mirror Kathryn Janeway and is transported to Earth's Moon, where he meets mirror Spock. Mirror Spock informs Kirk that, after Kirk had challenged him to reform the tyrannical Terran Empire over 108 years ago, mirror Spock had first risen in power in the Empire until he finally overthrown Emperor Tiberius I (mirror Kirk) and had the authority to implement the reforms. However, an Alliance between the Klingons and the Cardassians thereafter attacked and defeated the Terran Empire, and enslaved the Terrans and the Vulcans. Mirror Spock and mirror Janeway are now part of the resistance and had traveled to Kirk's universe to enlist Kirk's help to defeat the Alliance. Gul Rutal, captain of the mirror Voyager, tells Picard that visitations from Picard's universe had inspired resistance and rebellion against the Alliance, in particular at the space station Terok Nor. The Terran resistance had even managed to construct a warship, the Defiant, using stolen Starfleet plans, for use against the Alliance. Therefore, the Alliance had decided to infiltrate Starfleet and steal technology to combat the resistance, such as the plans for Voyager. Picard manages to send a warning to Starfleet, before he and his crew were taken to an asteroid labour camp in the Goldin Discontinuity maintained by the Alliance, commanded by Regent Picard (mirror Picard). Meanwhile, Kirk tries to enlist Ambassador Spock's support for the resistance, but Spock is reluctant, citing the Prime Directive. In fact, Spock was informed that Starfleet suspected the Terran resistance of hijacking the Enterprise-E using a mirror Voyager constructed from the plans that they had stolen. Spock also informs Kirk that Teilani, Kirk's lover on Chal, had been kidnapped by the Alliance, who left a warning that Teilani would be killed if Kirk helped mirror Spock and the resistance. Kirk decides to help the resistance after all, and with Spock, Admiral McCoy, and Scotty, Kirk proceeds to the Goldin Discontinuity aboard the USS Sovereign, which had been assigned to investigate the threat from the mirror universe. Spock verifies that the resistance had nothing to do with the hijacking of the Enterprise-E through a mind-meld with mirror Janeway. Kirk soon realises that Starfleet had been infiltrated by Alliance agents who had replaced their counterparts in this universe, and that they could be heading towards a trap. They discover that Fleet Admiral Nechayev, who first assigned the Enterprise-E to the Goldin Discontinuity, and now the Sovereign, is actually her mirror counterpart. Alliance agents reveal themselves to Kirk and detain the group, but Kirk and his friends manage to escape to the runabout St. Lawrence carried onboard Sovereign's shuttlebay. St. Lawrence escapes pursuit by Sovereign among the plasma storms in the Goldin Discontinuity and proceeds to the asteroid labour camp. Picard and his crew were made to construct a crossover device to be used for transporting the Enterprise-E to the mirror universe. Picard was planning a rebellion when he was brought for questioning by the Regent. There he finds that Teilani was also a prisoner of the Regent. The Regent had more or less anticipated that Picard was planning a revolt, and had decided to taunt Picard by executing Riker, Deanna, Dr. Crusher, La Forge, and Data. The five were about to suffocate in the vacuum of space when the St. Lawrence arrived just in time and beamed them aboard. The Alliance-controlled Sovereign and Voyager attack the St. Lawrence, but Kirk and mirror Janeway were able to transport to the Voyager and retake the starship. Picard and Teilani escape from the Regent, with Picard planning to disable the crossover device. The Starfleet prisoners revolt against their captors, and Picard kills Gul Rutal. However, the Voyager fires upon the asteroid labour camp, also intent on stopping the crossover device but risking the lives of hundreds of prisoners. Voyager's sensors locate Teilani. Kirk beams down and locates Picard and Teilani. After the three return to Voyager, the Voyager battles the Sovereign. Scotty creates a warp core breach on the Sovereign, causing the Sovereign's warp core to eject. The warp core explodes and interrupts the crossover device's transport sequence, and the Enterprise-E remains in this universe. Scotty locks out the Sovereign's controls, while the Voyager rescues the camp survivors. Kirk discovers that Teilani is pregnant and proposes to her. However, the Enteprise-E suddenly comes online, and a transmission from the ship shows that Tiberius had beamed onboard... |

Analysis . The Enterprise-E was conducting a study in the Goldin Discontinuity as to whether stable wormholes can be created in such a region, as given by the example of the Bajoran wormhole's close proximity to the Badlands, another plasma storms-filled region. . After Kirk's visit to the mirror universe in 2267, in 5 years time mirror Kirk became commander-in-chief of the Imperial Starfleet. 5 years after that, mirror Kirk became Emperor Tiberius I of the Terran Empire. Meanwhile, mirror Spock consodilated his power, and was able to overthrow Tiberius. Within 10 months, mirror Spock introduced reforms to the Empire and withdrew occupation forces from more than fifty worlds. However, Tiberius tried to reclaim his empire by forming an alliance between the Klingons and the Cardassians, to attack the Empire. The Alliance defeats the Terran Empire in the final battle at Wolf 359, and proceeds to lay waste to Earth. Vulcan then surrenders to the Alliance, and was similarly devastated. After the final battle, Tiberius disappeared and was rumoured to be assassinated since he was of no further use to the Alliance. . After the mirror Voyager was constructed, Voyager was similarly transported into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker. Gul Rutal subsequently betrayed the Ocampa, and managed to use the Caretaker's array to return Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant, before the Kazons destroyed the array. Mirror Neelix was taken aboard the Voyager as a guide and he goes to the Alpha Quadrant with Voyager. . The Thetas are Terran and Vulcan slaves who had earned trustee status in the Alliance. They include Regent Picard, mirror Tom Paris, and mirror Nechayev. . In the mirror universe, the Borg were detected much earlier than in Kirk's universe, and the Terran Empire managed to eradicate the Borg threat successfully. . Mirror Spock and mirror Saavik have a daughter named T'Val. . Mirror Spock is dying of the Bendii Syndrome. . Commander Zefram Sloane, the Enterprise-E security officer, is a descendent of Lily Sloane, Zefram Cochrane's assistant. |

Notes . There is a slight discrepency about the year Spectre takes place in. Kirk visited the mirror universe in 2267, and 108 years after that is 2375. Also, Dr. Bashir and Major Kira were said to have visited the mirror universe five years ago. They did so in DS9 "Crossover" (2370), so 5 years after that is 2375. Admiral McCoy is said to be 148 years old. Since McCoy was born in 2227, that makes the year to be (2227 + 148) = 2375. However, there is a mention that Starfleet made contact with USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram through an alien communication array two months ago. This occured in VOY "Message in a Bottle" (Stardate 51462) set in 2374. Also, one year after Avenger (set in 2373) is 2374. I place Spectre in 2374, and regard the 2375 references as slightly off. (see Notes for Dark Victory) . Kirk has realised that he had once met Captain Sisko before, when he saw an image of Sisko in an update on the Dominion War and recognised him as a lieutenant whom he had encountered on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 during the five-year mission. Sisko had traveled back in time to 2267 in DS9 "Trials and Tribble-ations". |
