Ultimate 3-Riv St. Pat's Celtics Pick Up Games News You Need Photos Links

That's right! More news! This time on the new blue background. Flashy, no?

Well, this episode is to celebrate the beginning of the first Indoor Ultimate in Trois-Rivières! That's right, Philippe managed to secure a gym at L'Ecole Chavigny in Trois-Rivières-Ouest every Wednesday night from 8:30-10:00.

The first such evening happened last night and there were 10 people who braved the icy tundra that is Trois-Rivières and played a little disc in the warm, warm gym. Mmmmmmmm. The game moved a lot faster than people were expecting but they had a lot of fun. We are already looking forward to the next edition of Indoor.

So I finally sat down and decided to do some writing about Ultimate in Trois-Rivières. About time, eh? Anyway, here's the scoop. Indoor is coming to an end but not before we travel back to Quebec for the second version of the Abeille Géllée ("freeze bee", get it?) Indoor Tourny. We will be hanging out with our friends the Fabulous Flying Flamingoes from Ottawa but we will not have any of them on our team. In fact, they need one of our players to help them out. Catherine is breaking ranks with Crackpot Mental and will play with FFF for the tourny.

After last year's excellent experience with the Motel Doyon (website), we will be staying there again this year. They spoiled us so badly last time, we simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to stay there again!

This year's roster includes (the "$" denotes who has paid their tourny fees...well done!):
  • Philippe
  • Genevieve
  • Marie-Eve
  • Yannick
  • Barbarella
  • Jean-Raymond
  • Simon
  • Nicolas
  • Rafael
  • Rebekah (pick-up from Fredericton!)

Quebec Indoor Tournament Report

Wow! Where to begin, where to begin...The much anticipated tournament hosted by Quebec City Ultimatehappened this past weekend and Crackpot Mental had a blast! On Friday, despite a wicked-good snow storm, quite a few players from Crackpot Mental made the trip to Quebec and the Motel Doyon. Unfortunately, our pick-up from Fredericton (Rebekah, who plays with Spawn) and her boyfriend, Bernie, were way-laid in La Pocatiere due to zero visibility in that area of the province. The Flamingoes made it in one piece and we had a nice get together in our house as the Flamingo area was more akin to a prison...ahhh, the benefits of arriving first! They decided to exact revenge by placing an order for a wake-up call for 5:30 a.m. No one slept in that room, though! HA!

When the Flamingoes had left us for the evening, several of us chatted about strategy against the Flamingoes "Gold Shorts" Team for the next morning. We decided on a 1-3 endzone zone defence and to make the FFF work HARD for every point. Unbeknownst to us, the FFF had some fun at our expense laughing about how badly they would thrash us and how much fun it would be to shut us out. The score at half time was 9-8 in favour of the FFF. The lead changd twice in the second half with neither team ever getting more than a one-point lead. Sadly, we came out on the short end at the cap 12-11. However, Crackpot Mental played a solid zone (despite the prostestations by certain members of FFF) and took advantage of the dropped passes by our opponents. It's always fun playing these guys as we know them well. I don't think they were expecting what they got from us. That game kept us (me?) feeling good all day long! Thanks, FFF! It's always good to see you guys!

Our second pitted us against Nordisques a home team. Simply put, they thrashed us. Ouch. The final score was 17-5 and we were simply unable to put up any method of slowing down their incredible speed. We took this especially hard after our rousing game with FFF. We take heart in the fact that this team won the tournament and beat FFF twice to do it. Next time, Nordisques, next time...

Game number three and we were ready to get revenge for our loss to Nordisques. Unfortunately Marmottes Volantes didn't expect us to work and play as hard as we did. We caught them sitting back on thier heels a bit and the zone was frustrating for the Marmottes. We led at the half and won the game 17-11 and once more our spirits were high looking toward our last game of the day (and the party and costumes to come).

The Mad Ployes from Edmunston would be our last game of the day and we were looking for a win to go 2-2 on the day. It was not to be. Fatigue caught up to us and we were thrashed again 17-6. We were not in this game at all. Little did we know that the next day would provide us an opportunity to exact revenge...

The Party...wow. Where to begin...we showered and "warmed up" at the party house (chez Crackpot) and ventured forth to the party. Our entrance was spectacular! Members of Crackpot Mental and FFF dressed in some of the most incredible clothing you've ever seen! Simon dressed like a demented used-car slaesman/Herb Tarlec cross, Andrew as a disco demon afro and all, Catherine (aka "Gloria") in shimmering gold and a blonde wig, Kevin in his housecoat and velour shirt, Jeremy looking all ska-like and Gavin and his undescribable outfit. Pictures should follow. We won that party. We danced and made others dance, we garnered a lot of attention but it was not the end of our night. We moved the party to Le Maurice like last year and it was, once again, our bar and everyone else was invited. At least until the "ringers" arrived.

Upon our arrival at the bar, Gavin, Simon and Andrew took charge of the speakers. We held the speakers without any trouble for most of the evening. Andrew alone on his speaker with his afro kept everyone about 10 feet away. Later in the evening, however, dancers with gold body suits and glow-sticks came and we were shamed off the speakers. We went back to the hotel and watch some "Emmanuelle".

Sunday morning arrived too early but we managed to beat Tondeuses Volantes handily 17-6. To be more spirited we could have taken the zone off but I wanted my gang to be rested for thier last game so we ended the game as quickly as possible. The zone was solid for both of our last games. Unfortunately this year, the Tondeuses did not have free beer to hand out after the game :-( That's OK because it is always to fun to play them and it was great revenge over their destruction of us at Parlee Beach last year...

The last game of the tournament for us pitted us against Mad PLoyes again. The same team that shredded us in the last game on Saturday was unable to get anything going on Sunday. Add to that the fact that Crackpot Mental simply came together as a unit. We had sweet flow and capitilized on all mistakes. Half time arrived in 9 minutes with a score of 9-0. We ended up winning 17-3. Wow. So, we ended the tournament at 3-3, 1-3 in division play and 2-0 in playoffs. We finished tied with Brachyblaste (Edmunston) for second place in Spirit, too!

As always, a fun weekend made more fun by hanging out with the Flamingoes and the addition of Rebekah to our line-up (and that of Brachyblaste...hmmm). A big thanks to Dominic Levesque who organized the tournament and has ensured that Crackpot Mental will be there next there. Thanks and congratulations as well to all our players and especially Genevieve the new captain of Crackpot Mental.

See you at the next tourny!

May 23, 2001

We had 24 people at practice yesterday! A record! News of Ultimate is spreading like wildfire through 3-Rivières. St. Pat's school team was at a tournament in Montreal last week and had a blast and impressed people at their very first tourny.

Both Chavigny and Des Estacades (schools here in 3-Rivières) have multiple teams and we hope to have a school/junior tourny here in the relatively near future.

Let's keep those discs spinning and Ultimate alive here in 3-Riv!!
