Astronomy is the study of the solar system and the universe, including all the physical bodies of in it, such as stars, comets, asteroids, moons, and also planets. This section is consequently being updated. We live on one of 9 planets in a solar system, next to other solar systems inside a galaxy (the Milky Way galaxy), which is next to other galaxies grouped together called the Local Group. The nearest galaxy is the Andromedra Galaxy. The 9 planets orbit around the Sun, which is the closest star to the Earth. Moons orbit the planets. In the year 2003 there are 127 known moons in the solar system. We live on the third farthest planet from the Sun. Between the planets Earth and Mars, lies the Asteroid Belt. Asteroids are minor planets that revolve around the Sun. Each asteroid has a number, going chronologicly from discovery. A bunch of stars, dust, etc. held together by gravity is called a galaxy. Certain stars are grouped to formed certified constellations. There are 88 constellations total documented. The average distance from the Sun to the Earth is exactly 1 astronomical unit (AU). The time it takes the speed of light to travel in one year is a light-year. The study of the universe is cosmology, and the universe is 13.7 billion years. |
