UNICODE

UNICODE stands for UNIque CODE which is a 16bit is encoding most of the world languages area included in this as a result no confusion will occur. A Japanese guy opens a Tamil document will open it as Tamil document and not as Japanese. Windows 2000/XP/2003 have built in support to Tamil UNICODE. We need to have software to input UNICODE. There is an IME (Input Method Editor) comes with windows 2000/XP/2003 and there are many third party products among them I prefer ekalapai (anjal layout) from thamizha

Setup UNICODE for Windows 2000/XP/2003

  • Start->all programs ->Control Pannel (or start -> settings -> Control Pannel)
  • Click the regional and language option (if not first date, time and regional and languge options then to regional and language option)
  • Under the language tab tick "Install files for complex scripts for....." for Windows XP/2003 and for Windows 2000 tick the indic language.
  • Click OK.
  • setup may ask for a cd. Insert the appropriate windows 2000/XP/2003 cd (even evaluation. One guy told that even german version is working.)
  • Restart the system enjoy

    If you have a windows xp sp2(service pack2) either as an intergrated or a separately installed you may prefer to go for LIP (Language Interface Pack). Though Hindi Windows LIP can be installed with SP1 still SP2 is recommended. All other Indic languages requires Windows SP.
