U. Machias Online
THE ARTS
By Duane M. Ingalls

A note from Duane:
"Having checked in for a rare moment with the online scene again, I do apologize for what
looks like an ad for d.m. ingalls in the arts & entertainment section...I think the powers-
that-be are serving me a well-deserved late and particularly inactive punishment.. Well,
I do have something underway, but more so lots of matters in the way with my professional,
family & personal regards at this point in time... Meanwhile, I have browsed in here a little
and must remark favorably to the fine work posted by staff & readers... It's really nice to
read the items by R. Albee, S. Gagnon, M. Pascucci, and J. Beagan, and to know that
there are some caring folks hereabouts in touch with us... Thanks!
The rest of you - get busy! (and that goes for me too, a s a p...)
with intellectual endearment, d. m. i."

While we patiently wait for another masterpiece from Duane, here's a little something
you might find interesting.

REFLECTIONS ON A COUPLE VERY POPULAR
PORTSIDE SHOWS

TRAVELIN' MAX
Travelin' Max is a returning one-man-show who played for a packed house in Portside earlier this semester. Audience participation is the big thing with Travelin' Max, and the audience was especially lively that night. Among other things, we were treated to such delights as a pie eating contest, dance contest, and sing-alongs.
Although the Student Center endeavors to bring quality entertainment to Portside on Friday nights, many of the events are poorly attended. For those of us who attend on a regular basis, we can't begin to imagine why. So take a look at the fun we had and plan on making 8:00 on Friday nights your time to be in Portside!

The "Boys" sing their hearts out, especially Matt who got a little
carried away that night--just ask his girlfriend Jill!

The audience has as much fun as the stage volunteers

SEVEN NATIONS
"And now for something completely different," as Monty Python's John Cleese would say. Seven Nations arrived in their own bus and with their own roadie and sound man. Because
of that the Student Center's sound man, Peder Moe, got the night off and sat in the audience, uncomfortably at first, saying, "I feel like I should be doing something!"
Well, the rest of the audience was anything BUT uncomfortable, as Seven Nations strode in with bagpipes screaming and a wailing fiddle, et al. From then on the evening was filled with super Celtic Rock, dancing, and an enthusiastic audience that ranged from age 3 to about 60.
Wait a minute! Bagpipes? Fiddle? Seven Nations incorporated traditional instruments
in some "good rockin' music," said one enthusiastic spectator.
Remember the name Seven Nations, because if they come again you WON'T want to
miss them!
Thank you, Student Center, for providing little ol' Machias, Maine with some memorable performances.
Students, check out what's happening every Friday night in Portside!

The band near the beginning of the evening

A few brave souls ventured onto the dance floor after some coaxing by the Student Center's second-in-command, Claudia Hamilton.

Peder's competition

Finally, everybody loosened up!

Even those who didn't dance had a great time in a full house

Invited on stage, students join the band

Have toy truck in mouth, will travel.
