TERMINATED
by Mike Colucci

Shirley Erickson's position is being eliminated?! This is the latest news
and reaction around campus. Why would she be the one axed? She is one of few
people in administration who's liked and respected by most students. That's
tough to come by. Who will stand up for us now? Who will speak for us?
Who will care about us?
This was Shirley's job, more than anything. At least that's the way we saw it.
Before today, I thought President Joseph was doing
a fine job in his first year here. Why did he have to choose Shirley?
Couldn't he have found another way to make budget cuts? I really don't think
he realizes what he's doing with this one and I sincerely hope he's prepared
for a huge fallout around campus.
This is something that will kill employee
and student morale. Why should people work hard for the university when it
doesn't matter how hard they work? Everyone's going to be worried about
being "terminated." If Shirley could work as hard as she did and still be
let go, why should anyone else bust their butt? I'd be willing to bet that
this is the way people will think now.
Good luck wherever you go, Shirley.
You'll be missed around UMM if you're not back next year.

** Editors' Note **
U. Machias Online is aware of 4 administration changes, although we have not
been able to confirm some of this information with President Joseph.

Mike Colucci has attended UMM since 1997 and has strong concerns for the future of the university.
He will graduate in December with a B.S. in Business Administration.
He is not yet sure what he wants to do with his life, but hopes to figure that out before he retires.
