STUDENT NEWSPAPERS AT UMM

The Summary is a great addition to the school. It's about time we had a newspaper published.
It's very popular around campus. I still miss the Invasion, but that was more of a way for people
to vent viciously and anonymously without getting in trouble. It stirred controversy, but didn't
accomplish anything.
I have one qualm about the Summary and that's that it's not proofread very well. By the short
column that Laurel Robinson wrote in the most recent issue, it was clear that she has a strong
grasp of the English language and understands punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar.
I just wonder why she doesn't quickly proofread each article that goes through. I'm also disappointed that the course isn't being offered next semester, my last at UMM.
Now, while I enjoy the fact-based articles in the Summary, I also enjoy the OPINION-based
articles on U. Machias Online. I like the fact that I have a place to vent my frustrations and
thoughts about this school. I am allowed to have opinions and share them without having
"all the facts." I actually often do have all the facts, but they don't necessarily sway my
opinions. For the most part, my brain works in a logical and fact-based manner, but every once
in a while it's sentimentality that drives me.
The situation with Shirley is one of those instances.  I know why they had to let her go, but I
didn't have to agree with it. I knew about it before most of campus, because Shirley told me
the morning that it happened and explained why. If I didn't have all the facts, I may have taken
my opinion to the President. But I didn't. I chose to write to the newspaper with my OPINIONS.
I was actually hoping that there would be an article about the budget cuts in the Summary, but
there hasn't been one. It's a huge issue on campus, but we got an article about a pizzeria in
Calais. I don't run the newspaper, but I think that since it's called the S"UMM"ary, it should talk
about more UMM-related issues. But that's just me. I am very happy with the newspaper overall.
I shouldn't complain because we did have a semester of one.

   Mike Colucci

** Editors' Note **
The editors of U. Machias were in the class that produced "one" issue of The Summary,
fall of 2000.
In our class Laurel Robinson did proofread each and every article.

Mike Colucci has attended UMM since 1997 and has strong concerns for the future of the university.
He will graduate in December with a B.S. in Business Administration.
He is not yet sure what he wants to do with his life, but hopes to figure that out before he retires.
