Nathan C. Turk Memorial Basketball Game
Second Annual Nathan C. Turk Memorial Game  to be held October 20th

The second annual Nathan C. Turk Memorial Game will be played at UMM at 7 PM on Saturday,
October 20th. The game will feature several UMM Men's Basketball Alumni vs. a local All-Star team
consisting of players from Machias, East Machias, Calais, and Woodland. Last year's event raised
several thousand dollars for a scholarship in Nathan's memory.
Nathan Christopher Turk was a freshman student-athlete at UMM, when he was hit by a car in Milltown,
New Brunswick on Sunday March 26th, 2000. A starting guard for the clipper men's basketball team,
Turk was named Maine Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year just weeks before his death. He was
also involved in the local community as he regularly visited a class at Rose Gaffney Elementary School.
"This day will be a time to remember Nathan and help contribute to a great cause in his name." "We
think about Nathan everyday, but this day will be special as he had such a positive impact on
all of us at UMM and in the local community," says Matt Lash,
the men's basketball coach at UMM.
UMM asks for donations at the gate rather than a set admissions charge.
Memorial game t-shirts will be on sale for $15.
People in attendance can also purchase last year's game t-shirts for a cost of $5.
All proceeds go toward the Nathan C. Turk Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Spotlight on Outstanding Student Volunteers at UMM

Each month at UMM, students and organizations dedicated to performing community service are
honored as Volunteers of the Month. These students are recognized for their time volunteered
and fundraising efforts for Machias area local schools, non-profit agencies and organizations.
Each outstanding individual or group volunteer receives a certificate of appreciation for their
commitment to serving their community.

Volunteers recognized for the month of September are Katie Adams, Beth Dyer, and Kappa Eta
Sorority. Adams volunteers with the Washington County Reads tutoring program at Milbridge
Elementary School with Mrs. Meglis’ 1st grade class for nine hours each week on top of being a
full-time student and R.A. in the Residence Halls at UMM. She is in her third year as a reading
tutor and commends the program as good classroom experience for students learning to become
teachers. Beth Dyer, a part-time AmeriCorps Education Award member, volunteers on average of 15
hours each week at the local courthouse archiving historical documents for the town of Machias and
is currently working with other part-time AmeriCorps students at UMM and members of Epsilon Sigma
Alpha sorority to start an Adopt-a-Grandparent program at Marshall Manor. The Sisters of Kappa Eta,
a philanthropic and academic sorority, distributed candles for a vigil held on campus in
remembrance of the victims of September 11th and collected donations totaling $700 for the
American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Washington County Reads and Counts Fall 2001
UMM Students and Community Members Help Tutor Kids in Local Schools

The Washington County Reads and Counts tutoring program is well under way for this school year.
Currently run by the AmeriCorps*VISTA at the University of Maine at Machias, this program was started
in September 1999 as a response to former President Clinton’s America Reads and Counts initiative to
encourage community involvement with helping children in reading and mathematics.   Nine tutors
comprised of three UMM students and six community members from Machias, Columbia Falls, Harrington
and Milbridge are dedicated to helping young children succeed in their grade levels with their reading
and math skills.   These trained individuals volunteer from two to nine hours per week in classrooms working
with children one-on-one and in groups.  Reads and Counts tutors are helping children at Rose Gaffney
Elementary School, Milbridge Elementary School and WHCA Machias Child Care Center this fall
with plans to expand to Harrington Elementary.

If you are a parent or interested community member and would like to get involved with tutoring
in local schools, please contact Jennifer Farrell, MCC AmeriCorps*VISTA and Program Coordinator,
at 255-1372 or jennifer.l.farrell@maine.edu.  Applications are being accepted for spring enrollment
into the tutoring program.  All interested are welcome to attend the upcoming training session
with guest speaker Gael Romei on Saturday, November 3 at 9 am in Portside Kimball Hall at UMM.
