Wonderful Jesus
Joanne W. Webster

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:  and the government shall be upon his shoulder:  and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."  Isa. 9:6

Names have great significance, and there are 256 names for the Lord Jesus Christ, probably because words could never express or define how Wonderful He is.  "His Name shall be called Wonderful".   Wonderful describes something that is beyond common.    We study about His birth; He didn't come into this world in a King's Palace with golden beddings and tapestries with angelic beings attending His every whim.  He came into this world born to a poor woman and His cradle was a manger found in a lowly stall filled with hay and animals.   His birth was not proclaimed in the streets by the Royal Announcer, but Angels appeared to the shepherds in the field and declared "His name shall be called Wonderful".   He came to lift up those who had been cast down, to seek and to save that which was lost, to open deaf ears and give sight to the blind, to be a blessing to the entire world.  The character of Jesus was demonstrated in His teachings; even His enemies could find no fault in Him except that He claimed God as His father.
His nature was one of unselfishness and His love was bestowed upon all who knew Him.  His compassion for others was limitless; with hands of Healing He touched the afflicted and made them whole.  He introduced the purity of the Heavenly Father to people of low degree and taught them a way to live that was pleasing to the Father.  His first miracle was performed in a distant home to save a poor woman from humiliation.  He wept over Jerusalem but He never had mercy on Himself.  "His name shall be called Wonderful"..
for there is no other word to describe Him.  He taught that all men could be saved but would be lost if they did not believe on Him.  He declared that He was the fulfillment of prophesy and the law of Moses.  He never made an effort to try and convince His enemies that He was the Christ, but the words of His mouth were His testimony.  Jesus foretold how and when He would die; and He suffered and died before thousands of people in Jerusalem who had come from many places to attend the Passover.  The sky was darkened and the sun hid its face from the dreadful scene; a great earthquake shook the city, and the dead came out of their graves appearing unto many within the city, and the veil of the temple was rent from top to bottom.  That event has been termed "Wonderful" even in the horror of the moment because we are now allowed to approach the Father for ourselves.  Our Saviour was true to the name, Wonderful; 800 years before his birth the prophesy had been given.  The name fits Him..for He is truly Wonderful

Ps 25:28 “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls.” This verse tells us that we have the ability to rise above any situation in life in order to fulfill the commandments of God. Life is not always perfect, and sometimes we want to carry unforgiveness in our spirit toward those whom we feel have harmed us through word or deed, but if we expect God to forgive us, we have to forgive others, even those who have not asked us to forgive them, nor even acknowledged they have done us harm. “Even as God, for Christ’s sake, hath forgiven you…”

Freedom from the burden of unforgiveness can only be compared to the beauty of the rainbow after the soft cleansing rain on a beautiful day that refreshes the earth and renews and replenishes all that grows therein. Tenderness, kindness, love and compassion are always companions of those who speak the truth and walk in the light of His great love.

RIGHTEOUS LIVING

EPHESIANS 4:25-26;31-32

“Wherefore, putting away lying; speak every man truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.  Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath….Let all bitterness and wrath, and anger and clamour and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice; and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s, sake  hath forgiven you.”

Society today does not endorse nor encourage truthfulness as a rule; we have become accustomed to using truth when it is convenient.  The Word of God instructs us to “speak every man truth with his neighbor”…this means even all the time, not just when conven-ient.  Our reputation as a person of truth will elevate us to a position of trust among our friends, family and business associates as a person whose words can be depended upon.”For we are members, one of another….when we are true to ourselves, we will be true to one another, for our hearts are intertwined with those in whom we have trust and confidence.

As Christians, we are taught in the word to be keepers of the peace, and to be patient with one another; so often in the course of the day, we lose patience because of frustrations and  circumstances that cause tempers to flare…angry words are spoken that wound the heart, sometimes the situation gets totally out of hand and before we realize it…. We have a tragedy at hand.  A precious relationship has been severely damaged by hateful words spoken in a moment of uncontrollable anger…”let not the sun go down upon your wrath…”  Remorse and sorrow for the evil deed are only the first steps in the recovery process in this matter; there has to be some action taken toward asking forgiveness for speaking those harmful words.  What we first have to realize is this…it does not matter who or what instigated this problem, what matters is who or what resolves the problem before the sun goes down on the problem.

A Goal in Life

As we look around  the Emerald Coastline, we see the beautiful homes and towering new structures under construction , and we read about the plans for even newer and larger developments to begin construction in the near future.  All these projects require months of planning,  architects to make drawings on paper of the vision in one’s mind that masons and carpenters and other workmen that can conform to those plans and bring the idea into reality.

This same concept can be applied to life.  The gift of life should not be taken so casually that we just drift along without aim or purpose.    Many times we suffer disappointment because we have not set goals and ideals before us, and we have not pressed forward to attain success.  Sometimes we face the mid life crisis because we realize suddenly that we have lived our lives to a great extent without purpose or aim and with no goal in mind and suddenly we’re facing retirement age and we have achieved nothing.   This is a main cause of depression in our society today.

In setting goals and priorities, one should evaluate what is really important.  Those things of importance should include eternal values.  I think our highest aim should be to model ourselves in the image of our Creator, and in doing so, we will strive to become that person  that He has given us the ability to become.

The Bible says Abraham was “a friend of God”…what perfect words to be said in any book, especially the Bible, of any man.  In reading about Abraham, I would suggest that he might have been one of the early immigrants….God told him to take his family, his servants, his animals and all his belongings and go to a country he had never seen and dwell among people he had never met and did not know.   But the Bible says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him as righteousness”….that means he believed God without question and honored Him in all his ways and behavior.  His attitude toward God and his obedience to God’s Word made him a friend of God.

Abraham had a goal in life…to please God.  He had a personal relationship with God , and he maintained that relationship through prayer and  communion with Him.  His faith in God caused him to never doubt the promises of God, and one of those promises was that he would have a son.  Many years passed and no son came, but after Abraham was an old man, the promise was fulfilled and the son of promise, Isaac, was born.

We can relate parts of this story to our lives today, because the life of the immigrant is not easy.  Every day new situations arise that must be dealt with.  But we must realize, as Abraham did, life is a journey built of promises from God, and those promises will be fulfilled all along the way.  Our goals in life should be to honor Him and please Him and He will protect us  and cover us with His great hand of mercy.  King David said, “I have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor His seed begging bread”…There is always a bridge to be crossed from bondage to freedom…there is a divine connection…His name is Jesus.

VISIBLE MARKS OF SERVICE

Joanne Webster

April 2007

Deuteronomy 15:16 – 17: “And it shall be, if he says to you, ‘I will not go away from you’; because he loves you and your house, because he is satisfied with you; then you shall take an aul, and thrust it thru his ear unto the door, and he shall be your servant for ever.”

In the seventh year of servitude, a bondservant was allowed a choice of freedom from his Master; if the bondservant chose not to leave his Master, but to stay with him, he was to be given a mark in his ear for society to recognize him as a free man living under the authority and protection of his Master. This applied to men and women who had learned to trust their Masters and love them because of their love and compassion exhibited toward them during their years of servitude.

Spiritually speaking, we are all bondservants in our society today with a choice of many masters: alcohol, drugs, gambling, lies, or our Savior Jesus Christ. Spiritual darkness and bondage is imposed by Satan; lives are damaged and destroyed by the various masters men and women have chosen to serve. Spiritual release and deliverance from this bondage is secured thru Jesus Christ, who has redeemed us thru the shedding of his Blood.
Deuteronomy 16:20 “You shall follow what is altogether just, that you may live and inherit the land which the Lord God has given you”.. When a bondservant escapes imposed bondage, he flees the source of his bondage, spiritually speaking, that means the very appearance of evil doing. He runs toward the source of light, the open door to freedom, which is Jesus Christ. In John 10:9 Jesus said, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” Upon entering into the family of God we need to begin seeking knowledge about the Great Shepherd thru the reading of His word and thru direct communication with Him. Ps 86 is a prayer of David, and in it he says, “Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth; unite my heart to fear thy name.” Ps 84:9 “Behold, O God, our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness”.

The bondservant who chose to remain with his master was regarded as a

Member of his Master’s household; he was recognized as such by the mark he had taken in his ear. As followers of Christ, and as members of the family of God, we should be recognized by the Christian behavior we exhibit everyday. We have been called to be a “separate” people, separate from the bondage of the world and the masters of deception and deceit.

Do you bear the marks of your Master?
