In 1965, UNO students voted and chose the school's colors of silver and blue and chose the name "Privateers."
In 1984 UNO adopted Lafitte, the silver and blue alligator dressed as a Privateer for its mascot.  Lafitte appears at games with the cheerleaders and dance team and attends other UNO functions as well.

Let's give a cheer for old UNO,
Fling out her banner, forward we go,
Come on let's carry her colors Silver & Blue
Shout out her praises true.
U-N-O!
Our Privateers will march on to fame,
New Orleans glory they will proclaim,
So let that UNO spirit frighten our foe,
Let's hear it for UNO!
