This remarkable photo was likely taken in 1864. In a 1959 edition of the Siskiyou Pioneer, Charles and Marcelle Masson wrote of this photo: "The original inn of shakes was built in 1857. The long, low building of sawed lumber was built in 1864." Presumably the "original inn" is the two story building on the right, next to Ross's road. Ross's road is barely visible just behind the tree on the right. The "long, low, building" in the center is recognizable as the Resort dining room in later photos. Just to give a sense of the age of this photo -- the railroad (and the town of Dunsmuir) will not even arrive for another 20 years! |
