This page enlarges the small figures on the right of the 1864 photo (previous page), and provides some interpretation of the image.  Remarkably, it appears to show pioneers Ross McCloud and Mary Campbell McCloud themselves, and their two young children, standing in the doorway of the 1857 inn.

This further enlargement discloses more details about the figures standing near the doorway of the inn.

The original photo itself (a tiny 2" x 4") bears the handwritten date "1864" -- the date that the long, low building was constructed. In Summer 1864, Ross and Mary had 3 1/2 year old daughter, Elda, and a less than one year old son, George.  They also had a business partner, Isaac Fry.
This photo appears to show Mary standing in the doorway, with Elda standing in front of her, right foot on the ground, and left foot on the step.  Ross stands behind a baby carriage with a shade, with both hands resting on its handle, and presumably with baby George inside the carriage.  The jaunty man leaning against the building may be their partner, Isaac.
The larger photo, above, is important as well because it shows details of the road, as it passed between the inn building on the left, and the Springs themselves, just out of sight behind the tree on the right.
We know that the two-story part of this building was built "from shakes" in 1857 by Ross and Mary.  It is unclear if the attached one-story part of this building is the original log cabin built on this site, or if the both the single-story and two-story buildings were built by Ross and Mary.

Again, many thanks to Family Historian Larry Cambell who has a copy of  this photo in his safekeeping, and who scanned and enlarged this wonderful historical document.  Another copy, perhaps the original, appears to have been given by Charles and Marcelle Masson to the Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka, California.
