                                            Rembrandt Biography

Dutch painter, REMBRANDT HARMENSZOON VAN RIJN was born in Leiden in Netherlands on the 15th of July 1606. Known as "the Shakespeare of Holland", he is well known for his portraits, self portraits, landscapes, historical and mythological figures, biblical subjects and scenes of everyday life. His work is characterized by brilliant color combination and brushwork. His expertise in light and shadow effect won him a name in the whole of Europe. It is estimated that he painted between 50 and 60 self-portraits.  In addition to portraits, Rembrandt attained fame for his landscapes, while as an etcher he ranks among the foremost of all time. He was known as the master of western art. St. Paul in Prison (1627); Supper at Emmaus (1630); Self-Portrait, Staring 1630; The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632); Belshazzar's Feast 1635; The Sacrifice of Abraham 1635; Young Girl at an Open Half-Door (1645); The Mill (1650); Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer (1653); The Three Crosses (second state) 1653; The Return of the Prodigal Son (after 1660); The Conspiration of the Bataves 1661-62;The Syndics of the Drapers' Guild (1662) are some of the world famous paintings attributed to Rembrandt. He has to his credit approximately 600 paintings, 300 etchings, and 1,400 drawings.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was the son of a miller. Right from childhood he had an inclination to study painting and he left the University of Leiden in favour of a course in painting. He was influenced by the work of Caravaggio and many other Italian artists. At the age of 22 he began to teach students. He soon moved to Amsterdam in 1631, when his work had become well known and his studio in Leiden was flourishing. His name became quite popular as a portrait painter and he started receiving commissions from all around. He specialised in paintings on everyday life issues, things around him, every picturesque face and form he could observe, light and shade effect of objects and self portraits. His mother often became the model of his paintings and one can observe a strong resemblence between the two in his paintings.

From 1627 to 1631 Rembrandt painted some of the most well known single
figures - "St Paul in Prison" and  "St Jerome"  for instance. In these paintings greenish-grey
brush work is more prominent. "Simeon in the Temple," of the Hague Museum, is a fine
example of his work of  light and shade. The principal figure has been highlighted using
concentrated light effect  leaving the rest to the imagination of the viewer. " Lesson in
Anatomy " made in the year 1632 is one of his famous paintings. One of Rembrandt's
greatest portraits of 1634 is the full-length of Martin Daey.  "Old Woman" -Francoise van Wasserhoven at the National Gallery, of the same year, displays prominently the effect of reflected light.

In 1634 he married the beautiful fair haired Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin
of a successful art dealer who would enhance his career as a painter. She too was the
model for many of his paintings and drawings. They had four children but of the four
only one survived. Saskia was the model in many of his portraits and hedrew her as the
Queen Artemisia or Bathsheba or as the wife of Samson. Her long fair locks, are very
prominent in most of her portraits. The artist decorated her with pearls and gold and with
a flamboyant display of colors. "Saskia as Flora" is a fine examples of  Rembrandt's
exuberant display of colors accompanied by a strong light effect. "Saskia with child" is
another example of her portrait. "Marriage of Samson" of the Dresden Gallery, painted
in 1638 is one of Rembrandt's prominent works. She bore him four children, Rumbartus
and two girls named Cornelia after his  mother, all of whom died in infancy, and Titus,
named after Titia a sister of Saskia.  At Cassel (1633), at Dresden (1641), Antwerp(1641)
and a posthumous  (1643) at Berlin were made during this period. Unfortunately,
Rembrandt had to bear the utmost shock of his life caused  by Saskia's untimely death in 1642.
