George Seurat Biography
GEORGES SEURAT (1859-1891) undertook drawing lessons from the sculptor
Justin Lequienand also from artist Ingres, who was a worthy of Jacques-Louis David. Seurat did not just like the way colors were put onto the painting. He concentrated on the science of color in the picture and the optical effect of color mixing. Before starting painting on the canvas, he made sketch of most of his artwork so that he can experiment to find the exact color.Georges-Pierre Seurat was an innovator. He started a movement called neo-impressionist. He developed
a technique called pointillism or divisonism. In this method, he used small dots
or strokes of contrasting color to create the necessary changes within the painting.
He spent much of his life, searching for how different colors and linear effects
would change the look or texture of a canvas. With this technique he took longer
time to produce a work of art. The tiny dots of pure colort, when placed closely,
give the viewer a blended image optically. During his short life of thirty-two years, Seurat completed seven major paintings, 40 smaller paintings or sketches, and about 500 drawings. Some of his most famous paintings include: Bathing at Asnieres, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Le Chahut, Eden Concert. |
