LINN BANKS Born: BEF 1740, Virginia Died: AFT November 1799, Garrard County, KY Father: Gerard Banks (b. ABT 1705) Mother: Ann Stanton (b. BEF 1718) Marriage: Sarah Proctor, BEF 1762 Children: 1. BET 1762-72) Notes: Linn probably spent his earliest years in Orange Co., VA (that part which became Culpeper Co., VA in 1749) as his father seems to have been there then and he may have spent time in today's Stafford Co. as there seems to have been intercourse back and forth between the counties. * On 24 Mar 1758, Linn Banks, Gerard Banks, Eliza White and John Willson were witnesses to the will of Linefield Sharpe of King George Co., VA [prob. today's Stafford Co.]. (King George Co., VA Will Book A, p 105-7, quoted in Virginia County Court Records: Will Abstracts of King George County, Virginia (1752-1780), Ruth and Sam Sparacio, 1986) * In 1759, Linn was a soldier in the French and Indian War under Col. William Byrd; promoted to sergeant in 1760. (Amherst Co., VA Order Book, 1773-82, p 397) * On 17 May 1764, Linn Banks, James Connor, Frances Brown appraised the estate of Thomas Watts, dec'd. (Will Abstracts of Culpeper County, Virginia, Sparacio, 1988, citing Bk A, p 367) * In 11 Jun 1764 deed between his parents, Gerard and Ann Banks, and his brother Gerard Banks Jr and wife Frances, all parties to the deed living Culpeper Co., VA. A witness to this was LINN BANKS. (Culpeper Co., VA, Deed Bk D, p 491) * Between 1765 and 1769, Lynn Banks of Culpeper Co., VA bought 90 acres on the Rapidan River from John Spotswood's, dec'd. executors for 24 pounds.5s.6d. The land was on Cowslip Run, corner to John Gore and in John Wharton's line. Witnesses were Ben Pendleton, John Reeves and John Penn, Jr. (Culpeper County, Virginia Deeds, vol. IV, 1765-69, Deed Book E, p 269-71, J.F. Forman, 1979) * In will of brother Gerard Banks, written in Orange Co., VA, 9 Apr 1767, Linn was mentioned. (Orange Co., VA Will Book 2, p 397) [Gerard had recently moved there.] * On 3 Oct 1768, Linn and wife Sarah were given 70 1/2 acres in Amherst Co., VA by Linn's father. (Amherst Co., VA Deed Book B, p 376) * In 1770, Linn bought 70 acres adjoining his father's property from David Bly, Amherst Co., VA (Amherst Co., VA, Deed Book C, p 124) * On 26 Oct 1775, Linn and Sarah Banks sold John Proctor 100 acres for 27 pounds. This land was bounded by Baily Walker and Williams. Witnesses were Joseph Porter, Benj. Porter Jr., Rd. Cr. Webb, Wm. Lancaster. (Deed Abstracts of Orange County, Virginia (1759-1778) [Books 13-16], Ruth and Sam Sparacio, 1986, quoting Orange Co., VA Deed Bk 16, p 381-82) * On 26 Oct 1775, Linn and Sarah Banks sold Nicholas Arnold 136 acres for 116 lbs. This land was on a branch of Terry's Run, bordering Baylor Walker and John Proctor. Witnesses were Joseph Porter, Benj. Porter Jr., Rd. Cr. Webb, Wm. Lancaster. (Amherst County in the Revolution, p 81) * During the American Revolution, Linn furnished supplies to the Continental Army (Public Service Claims, Virginia State Library) 10 Apr 1781, payments to Linn Banks for 10 bushels wheat, 262.5 pounds of beef (Amherst Co., VA Public Service Claims) |
