Wellington
So I got into Wellington in the evening of February 4th, 2002.  I stayed in a bed and breakfast, since I was going to be in the city over my birthday (Feb. 5).  I thought I'd treat myself.  It was really nice.  The place was right off Courtenay Place, one of the main roads of central Wellington.  I could walk just about anywhere, and did.  I stayed in Wellington until February 7th when I took the Interislander ferry across Cook Strait to Picton and the South Island.
This is central city Wellington as viewed from Mount Victoria.  You can't really see the harbor in this view, but it's there!
I was pretty busy on my birthday.  I tried to register with the American Embassy, and was told they now do that in Auckland, Drat!  Then I went to the Beehive (left), the Exectutive building, and Parliment (right) for a little tour.  Then...
I walked along the waterfront.  Dipped my feet into Oriental Bay, which is connected to the Tasman Sea.  Walked a little further along the waterfront and went to Te Papa, the New Zealand National Museum.  Te Papa is great!  If you ever come to New Zealand, you have to go!
So on the 6th of February I decided to climb up Mt. Victoria.  Luckily it was sunny that day, instead of cloudy when I took this photo.  Great panoramic views of the city from the top!
Same day as I climbed Mt. Victoria, I took the antique cable car up to the Botanical Gardens.  So I know I've killed every plant I've had, but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate flowers.  Plus, you can take the cable car up the hill, then walk down the hill through the wonderful gardens.
Purdy Flowers!
On to the South Island: Picton
