Alternatives for Burmese Children is a non-profit organization, based out of Spokane, Washington, that was started in 1998 to furnish school supplies to the 25,000 Burmese children living as refugees along the Thailand-Burma border. These refugees are forced to live in fear of pursuit, camp destruction, inadequate food, rare medical care, and communication with the outside world only through missionaries and through such medical care that is volunteered.
Having visited these camps, ABC can attest to the primitive living situations, the brutality of the Burmese Army,, the precarious food supply, the active tuberculosis and malaria common amonng the refugees, and the reluctance of Thailand to shield the Burmese in their own country.
