Mount Meru

Mount Meru at 4,655 metres is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and Africa’s fifth. It remains relatively obscure, overshadowed by Kilimanjaro 70 kilometers to the east. It is a spectacular volcano well worth a visit.  To get to the summit one has to trek an exhilarating path along the crater rim. The cliffs inside the volcanic cone reach 1,500 metres, among the highest in Africa. Meru is the outstanding feature of Arusha N.P. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife including leopards, monkeys and around 400 species of birds.
