            What is WEEKdays?

Some students in grades 8 through 11 experience academic difficulties causing them to drop out of school or, at best, perform below potential: society cannot benefit from these untapped talents.  WEEK provides these youngsters with a calm setting where they can receive homework help or tutoring, and improve their study skills.

WEEK caters to young girls who could thrive academically if a quiet place and a helping hand were close by at homework time.  ESL students–students whose mother tongue is not English–can also benefit from this program.

WEEK operates on weekdays from 3:00 pm. to 5:45 pm.  University volunteers are assigned to help out with homework and to tutor wherever the need is greatest.  By 5:30 pm. participants should have made considerable progress on their homework.

General organization:

A site coordinator assures the smooth daily running of the program, while the university volunteers work directly with the program participants.   These supervised volunteers are matched to students according to their particular needs, usually on a one-to-one basis.  Prom-Edu-Val (PEV), a registered charity, provides the facilities and qualified personnel needed to run the program.

Cost
:
Week does not levy any fees for the program, but students must attend regularly.

Target  Group
:
There are manyyoung people in the downtown core who are not able to study adequately at home for many reasons.   Some need a structured, television and telephone-free environment.  Others need an adult at hand who can guide them through their homework, or teach them basic study skills.   Still others need somebody to explain it to them again in different ways.  Often  all that is needed is a little extra attention to get back on track with their studies, or to learn a skill missed at a lower level: catch-up programs are designed according to individual needs.   Finally, students from overseas may require assistance in adapting to a new language and educational system.

Students attending the program must have their teacher's recommendation.
