The Truth On "Anfal"

- In 1988 Saddam Hussein Lauched a compaign he called "Anfal" - it means "the spoils"

- The purpose of Anfal was to kill off all "Battle age" Kurdish men, which is a nice way of saying that it was a genocidal campaign to deal with a possible resistance against his oppressive regime.

- As a result of the 1988 Anfal campaign 50 000 to 100 000 people were killed

- On March 16th 1988 Saddam ordered a chemical weapons attack on Halabja, a Kurdish City in Northern Iraq.

- An estimated 5000 Kurds were killed by the poison gasses that bombarded Halabja and the surrounding area. Another 10 000 were injured.

- More then thirteen years after the massacre, the people of Halabja still suffer from very high rates of serious diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, birth defects and miscarriages.

- Chemical weapons such as poison gas and mustard gas, which were both used, were outlawed in 1925 by a treaty to which Iraq is a party.

- In reference to "prohibited zones" (The Kurdish regions of Iraq) Anfal stated that:

"all persons captured in those villages shall be detained and interrogated by the security services and those between the ages of 15 and 70 shall be executed after any useful information has been obtained from them, of which we should be duly notified."
