The Franz Josef Glacier is situated on the south island of New Zealand, and is part of the amazing Southern Alps.
These Alps cover a very large area and are covered by snow and contain many glaciated areas.
Southern Alps, New Zealand
The Franz Joseph Glacier falls from 2700 metres to only 300 metres above sea level: ( a 2.4km drop!) The Glacier is about 13km long.
It was named after Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef who died in November 1916, by the pionneering geologist Julius von Haast.
There are more glaciers on the western side of the main divide, and steep sides give them a faster flow.
Glaciers carry rock debris known as moraine on their surfaces and push a pile of rubble down the mountains.

The Franz Josef glacier is situated between the Baird and the Fritz ranges and it feeds the Waiho river, a fast and turbulent river known as the 'Smoking river' because of the vapour rising from its surface. The river carries small 'icebergs' from the glacier down to the sea.
The ice of the glacier is blue because it has been under such tremendous pressure
