On Saturday 25th March 2005, a tree was planted in the wood near Broad Oak Way Stevenage, in memory of DAVID PAINE, a 17-year old bicycle mechanic, who was stabbed to death at a party in Stevenage on 3rd February 2006.
The tree, a Platanus Orientalis digitalis, was planted by friends and family as a tribute to the fun-loving teenager, who worked as a bicycle mechanic at Marchalls Cycles, Roebuck.
Shop manager John Kinnear (left) was called upon to say a few words of tribute, whilst Tree Warden Carol Bates (pictured below) told the local youth, in no uncertain terms, to respect the tree, leave it alone, and remember what it is there for.
Bemused youths, sitting astride their mountain bikes, looked on as Carol continued 'we have put a lot of work into this whole project (the woodland) and we don't want it vandalised. We have given you a proper area in which to use your bikes. It is a case of give and take.'
She then turned to the gathered crowd and told them, 'if you see anyone vandalising these trees, come over and knock on my door, - I'll sort the b******s out!'
A commemorative plaque  (below left) was placed at the bottom of the tree, and this was followed by a bouquet of flowers, put there by the mother of the man accused of mrdering David Paine.
Others involved in the project are fellow Tree Warden Nahinda, and SBC Arboriculturist Richard Arnold.
